  • Hi,

Same sort of thing, My Husband banks with Abbey National and they have sent him a form offering him a 0% credit card. He doesnt have any debts so wanted to do a SBT, the form said to list all balance transfer requests.
He phoned the (not so very) helpline to ask whether he should put his bank account number, the lady he spoke to said 'no as that's called a cash advance and you will be charged for that'.
I understand from here Abbey are one of the few you can use for a SBT, has anyone done it? how do we make sure it is classed as a balance transfer and not a cash advance?
    Thanks.
    Waddle you do eh?

You may have to say you are paying off an 'overdraft' and ask for it to get paid into a (obviously) non-Abbey bank account.

EDIT: Also wait for the card to come through before trying to balance transfer - it sounds as if you wanted to do it on the application form, which you can't do with anything but credit/store cards.
  • Z - thanks for the reply, yes it was on the application form, he wanted to check as if he couldnt do a SBT he didnt want a credit card, he will wait and do it after he gets the card.
He wanted to put an amount down on the application form so they gave him a credit limit to cover it.
He does have another non Abbey bank account so if they agree that's a possiblilty.
When he spoke to helpline lady he said it was to pay off an overdraft, she said it would be classed as a cash advance.

    Thanks.

Has anyone ever tried to BT to a savings account through Egg with any experience to report?
Kind of. I BT from a First Direct credit card onto an Egg card so that the Egg card was in credit, then transfered that credit direct to a savings account with no problems.

However it may well be a different matter if the BT creates a debt.

I see from the above post that you have a first direct credit card, are you aware that you can req that it be changed to one of their other cards and thus gives you a further 6 months interest free?
Fantastic. First Direct gave me a credit limit that made me fall off my chair. If I can extend it another 6 months I'll be laughing.
Also not widely know but if you have a credit bal on your fd card you can req that the money be trans to your fd current ac and then onto a savs ac, if questioned as to why you have a credit bal just adv operator that you paid in error, and ask for there not to be a handling fee thus giveing you another option for super balance transfer.
There is another option I didn't quite have the balls to try. I did a BT from my FD card to my Egg card (and from there on to a savings account), but what they actually do is pay it into your bank account and set up another transfer to move it on the next day. There seemed to be nothing to stop me signing in online and cancelling the 2nd part of the transfer as it is just a standard bill payment.

I didn't but it should work and avoids having to answer any tricky questions about being in credit!

    I've just heard from MBNA.
They will nit charge me for SBT and after i use my account then I also get the free gift.
I phoned them first to check all this and at that time they weren't sure.
No reliance should be placed on the above.

:'( Just done my first ever BT with my MBNA CARD and been charged £35. Tried to argue with the girl by quoting the t&c that they "may" charge a handling fee but got nowhere, she said she was "capping" it for me at £35 and this sum would be added to my first repayment...BEWARE!

CallyAnna. This shouldnt' be the case. Let me confirm, you say your first BT.

Is this a BT when you opened the account on the introductory 0% balance transfer OR have you had the card a while and just done a BT on it now. If it's the first then it is wrong, if its the second it isn't.

    Can you let us know.

If it is the first i will take this up with MBNA on your behalf if you'll let me - as i'd like to know what happened
