Did they have it in stock for a replacement? Technically if they had it in stock they only had to give you a replacement bag like-for-like, if you choose to opt for something else then they don't have to give you your money back; if they didn't have it in stock it's another issue.

I also agree with Colliefrog about refunds, it will be refunded the same way it was paid.

It was a bargain at the time. The bag was a crumpets one and normal Debenhams price £130, but for 1 or 2 days they had it at £80, so it was money saving, well sort of! :rolleyes:

It's no longer a stock item.


I did have my receipt today and I paid by credit card when i bought it in May.

Well,only other thing that comes to mind is that someone once bought me a very nice handbag,and I used it eveyday (I can only use one handbag at a time) I suppose it wasn't meant for that type of use and it didn't last 9 months. I suppose it was the sort of bag that should be used for when you ae dressing up. I wonder if you over used the bag and it looked batteed.

No, It only got used now and again over July and August, and the store agreed it looked brand new apart from the peeling of the colour.

I have calmed down a bit now, I am sure I will find something in Debenhams to buy on the gift card. I guess everyones Christmas presents will be from there!

Debenhams policy is that if it's out of the 28 days then we will be happy to give you a gift card or an exchange if the item is faulty or we'll be happy to send the item back to our repairs to get it fixed for you.

In addition to statutory rights though, therefore a refund should have been given as it was a faulty item, especially with a receipt. Sounds like the sales assistant didn't know what they were doing. Also it really gets my goat when they say "as a goodwill gesture" as if you are asking for something unreasonable. You are legally entitled to a refund if goods are faulty.
As you accepted the gift card unfortunately there isn't anything you can do about it now.

I'm not sure that you are automatically legally entitled to a refund. I think the shop has the option to get the item repaired or replaced if they prefer but many shops do just give you the full refund as an easier option. However, it could be that Radley is a concession within Debenhams and had this have been a Debenhams bag, a straight refund may have been given. Just a thought anyway!

If you have your reciept you are entitled by law to have a cash refund just quote the consumer protection act and say you are reporting them to trading standards it should do the trick.
