Debenhams would onluy issue me a a gift card for a refund

I bought a Radley handbag in May from Debenhams. It's cream in colour and the colour has started to peel off making it look unsightly.
I spoke to Radly as they have a 12 month warrenty on their bags, who advised me to take it back to Debenhams for a refund or exchange.
I took it back and the manager said as good will she will only give a gift card for the cost which was £80.
I emailed Radly who said very sorry, must just be that particular stores policy.
So now I am stuck with £80 on a card for a store I very rarely shop in. I wanted my mony back.

Did you have the receipt?
I think if you have the receipt it has to be cash refund.0 -
Normally you would be refunded how you paid. If it was by card then it would go back on your card, if was cash you'd get cash back. It's unusual for a store to give a gift card as a refund on a faulty item. Unless the OP didn't have a receipt it's a bit odd they should do this.0

You need proof of purchase,a receipt? or your bank statement,if not (which i assume is the case) you are lucky they gave you anything.0

You don't have to accept a credit note for a faulty item, provided the return is with in a reasonable period of time and you have proof of purchase. If you didn't have any proof of purchase then they can give you what they want as it's only a goodwill gesture."One thing that is different, and has changed here, is the self-absorption, not just greed. Everybody is in a hurry now and there is a 'the rules don't apply to me' sort of thing." - Bill Bryson0

Do they still sell the bag for £80? In which case you could buy it with the gift card and you will have, in effect, a replacement as Radly suggested.
If you no longer want such a bag then you could always eBay the voucher. Won't get face value for it, but vouchers normally do quite well.0 -
