Why do people risk it all to buy vouchers of Ebay?

Hi

 I've been perusing Ebay for a while and often wonder why would buyers risk it all for vouchers on Ebay?
There is currently £500 worth of next vouchers going for £480 - I am perplexed?
My friend use to work for Next and if a voucher is bought with a dodgy c/c it is blacklisted rendering it worthless.
A lot of vouchers sell for around the same price they are worth but why would anyone risk it?

It seems most ebay buyers these days are nutters who will pay over the odds for anything.

Have a look at this thread:

  • I don't really understand why folks pay so much either but I'm not really bothered as I've just sold £25 worth of vouchers (which I didn't really want) for a department store for nearly face value so I'm well happy!

No I can spend the cash on something other than clothes!!

  • When I worked in Debenhams we often has lists of voucher sort codes that we had to check on any vouchers handed to use. These codes related to batches of stolen vouchers and we had to press the security alarm of if they were presented to us. I cannot believe that people will buy gift vouchers from anywhere else than the store its self!
  • i have saved pounds buying Next vouchers of ebay

and if i get a bad one i can always claim the money back from my Credit Card

Also ive never once seen anyone check mine.

I am not being rude, but under what grounds? Stupidity?
If a person wants to by a voucher from an unofficial source they shouldn't be allowed to claim a penny.
If I bought a dodgy rolex of a guy from the pub, i wouldn't expect my insurance company to cough up.
ultimately c/c customers are paying the costs for people like you who claim for things like this when they have been duped.

Well ultimately, it's Paypal that would have to bear the costs of a credit card chargeback if they could not recover the money from the seller.

I wouldn't be confident that a claim based on a voucher being invalid would be honoured - that is what is termed a "consequential loss" and might not be covered by a credit card company.
  • If you buy vouchers on the basis that they are 'good' and they turn out to be stolen, then they were miss sold (and more than anything there was a theft somewhere along the lines). Paypal SHOULD be more interested in this than many other claims and if they are not, I dont see why the buyer shouldnt chargeback.
    2 + 2 = 4
except for the general public when it can mean whatever they want it to.

I agree that you should try, but I don't think it's a good idea to go into these things with in invincible attitude, when in truth there's no guarantee you won't come away with nothing. I wouldn't risk being scammed out of, say, £25 for a couple of quid off the face value of a voucher.

I'm on dodgy ground here as I'm working on heresay and information that might turn out to be an urban myth..

However, I seem to recall somewhere on here being told that credit card companies are not responsible for 'stolen' or 'fake' goods purchased. That is because the CC company cannot be seen to deal with illegal items (stolen or fake would both be illegal for sale) and a buyer is not therefore covered by any credit card protection.

This is my point. People are paying up to 90% of a vouchers value on the net.
Some are paying more than it's worth once postage is added.
That's one hell of a risk.
Post Christmas I can imagine Ebay being awash with vouchers!!!
