I would definitely recommend a crate. I have 4 Cavaliers and 2 Pugs and they love their crates! I have 2 large ones but usually they all go and squash in together in the same one. I only lock them in there at night or if I go out and I know they can't chew anything they shouldn't and they also don't mess in there.
The trick with a pup is to put it outside after waking, after eating and also if they haven't been out for a while. Lots of praise when they go outside and ignore it when they go inside. If you clean it up with a biological liquid too this takes the smell away (if they smell that they've been in a particular spot before then they'll do it there again!)
Good luck with your new pup!0 -
Thank You both so much for your replies. :T
uktigerlily I did read yours yesterday morning and was really grateful for your advice but I haven't really had a minute to answer until now!
He seems to be doing really well seen as we have only had him just over 48 hours, I'm not sure if it's the breed or if all puppies pick things up so quick hes really settled already seems to know his name & comes when you call him, and walks on the lead really good in the back garden. We got him some puppy pads and he has been going on the one we have left for him in the kitchen most of the time we have put him one outside and he has started going on that too - not sure if he was thinking !!!!!!?! lol!!
We had a mad late rushed shop yesterday where we got most things and went to argos last to get a crate but the size was out of stock!!! As it was sunday everywhere else was closed so we had to go and get one today so tonight will be his first night in it.
The only thing he seems to be really struggling with is being left alone overnight he cries like a baby, although we have been ignoring him he hasn't got the message yet? We have been leaving the radio on for him and a teddy that he likes for company so we will have to see how he gets on in the crate tonight. Fingers crossed!
I was quite happy to pay £200 for him as I wasn't bothered about a pedigree and think both breeds are lovely so he should be a nice mix of the two plus pups are about £400-500 round here and are about £600-700 . They sold all 6 in less than 24 hours so everyone must have been thinking the same!
Not quite sure how you post a photo on here - any ideas?
Thanks again!0 -

You cant really shut a dog into a crate overnight on the first day - they dog has to get used to the crate gradually and associalte it with happy experiences- I presume you have read up on crate training?0 -

Best of luck. My Lhasa cries pitifully when his groomer is bathing him, it sounds hearbreaking even though he's wagging his tail at the same time ! He also honks like a goose, growls to get my attention and is an expert with the backchat. He's not a barker - just the one warning bark when necessary - but otherwise he's the most vocal dog I've ever had.
Lhasas are well known for being extremely stubborn, so if he complains loud and long about being put in the crate you may have to put your cloth ears on......................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

I have a Lhasa x Shih Tzu who looks more like a Lhasa he sounds just like yours Errata. Very vocal, doesnt bark if someone goes past like my old dog but will let me know what he wants something by barking or growling. Very stubborn, I used to crate him when I first got him which was fine for a week or two, then he started barking non stop when we put him in at 1am one night so left him out of the crate one expecting destruction in the morning and he didnt touch anything at all.
The first couple of nights he cried a bit, I got up and let him out but didnt talk to him much.
The grooming bit is very important, dont leave it too long for the first cut, I wont tell you what happens but it aint pretty lol!

lol - big ball of fluff ! Mine had his first haircut at 10 weeks and now he gets a no. 1 all over except for his ears and tail every 6 weeks. We've given up on the moustache and beard as I was sick of having to wash his face every time he came in from the garden or had something to eat. Not a traditional cut for a Lhasa, but he doesn't know he is one and I don't care.
He's really easy to comb and brush if I stand him on a kitchen worktop. If I try and do it while he's on my lap he treats it as a game!
If I'd known how blooming stubborn they were as a breed, I'd have got a cat......................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

To be honest although we have been thinking about getting a dog for a long while, we had no intention of getting one this weekend but he seemed like too good an opportunity to miss so we are trying to learn as much as we can asap as we go along as we have never had a pup before.
Can you suggest any good websites with crate training info? Thanks
tiff Yours looks gorgeous so fluffy - what a poser!! I will have to set up a flicker thing or something so I can post a photo. He also honks like a goose, .0 -
this may be useful - I have never crate trained but the organisation here are reputable -

Getting him used to the crate needs to be a gradual and positive process, otherwise you may end up with a distressed dog that is terrified of going into the crate.
However, even when he is happy in the crate you still need to get up a couple of times in the night to take him out for a pee.0 -
I got a book on crate training. We kept the crate in the living room with us during the evening with the door open and he used to go in there and lie down. He has a big thing for soft toys so we used to throw one in, knowing he would go and get it and bring it out to play with. We also used to throw a couple of treats in when we put him in at night. I used to put him in there if I wanted to hoover a room in the day time, so I knew he was safe and not peeing anywhere. Also when we went out.
There are some websites and forums on crate training. The only other thing I can think of is not to use the crate as a punishment.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -
