Fitting a new flue liner quote - eek!

We've just had our chimney swept and a smoke test done...and apparently we need a new flue liner. We're gobsmacked at the quote - £400!! Does this sound reasonable? We've struggled loads just to find a chimney sweep to do this, and goodness knows where else we can go to get another quote...but this is so high it seems madness. We've been without a fire now for weeks and getting desperate...any help/advice gratefully received!

so it seems reasonable? Does anyone know if there are any other options instead of a new flue? We really can't afford this :(

  • What fuel are you burning and what was the reason given for fitting a flue liner?
If you had your chimney swept you obviously dont have a stainless steel liner fitted now.
  • We've had our old gas fire and boiler removed and a new combi boiler fitted. We were advised by the corgi fitter to get the chimney swept before fitting a new fire, we thought the flue already there would be OK. We've had the chimney swept today and apparently the flue is in very bad condition and needs replacing...hence the quote.

  • If you are dealing with gas I cant see that you have any other option.:(
  • Good morning: Info on flue requirements is available in Building Regulations Part J .Flue replacement is not a cheap job.

  • You definitly need a flue liner if youve got a rubbish chimney. Its a horrible job fitting liners. £400 seems a good price, but yeah, i couldnt afford it either
  • We had ours done for our solid fuel stove in an inglenook, having put the job off for years. It cost £1000, and when I saw the tar-laden mess that was up there just waiting to set alight & burn the house down, I came out in a cold sweat and wished we'd done it much sooner. Lets just say it felt cheap when I considered the alternatives.
Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!

If that is the whole job, please let me know who you dealt with as this seems a very good price!
