Huddersfield University...

I am starting my first year at Huddersfield on the 22nd of this month :j , but as a 'mature' student with children, I won't be living in halls. Alot of these moneysaving threads seem to be based on students living in halls. I was wondering if there are extra grants/bursuries available to students who aren't based at the university. Also, just any general tips...
Oh, I also wanted to know the best/cheapest/possibly free place to park as I live about 20 miles away so will have to drive in.

Um grants and bursaries aren't just for people living in halls. They are for anyone attending the university.
You usually get them depending on household income, but I assume as you are working the household income maybe quite low?
Look on the university website for bursaries and such, there should be an explanantion there.

Hi Lokolo, sorry I understand that grants and bursuries are for everyone who attends - I have worded my question badly. I meant are there any out there for single mums etc for extra help with rent, childcare etc.
Thanks for the link

Ah ok lol

Yeh the links I gave just say you have to apply to local council and if they give you some sort of funding the university will also. So £££!0 -
I would suggest the best place to park for free is the Leeds Road retail park.
If you come into Hudderfield from the M62 junction 25 take the A644 to huddersfield - then right at the next roundabout following signs for Huddersfield on the A62 (follow signs for Galpharm stadium. The road is a 40mph limit .
You will see a BP Garage/McDonalds KFC on the right (also a screwfix).
As you pass these you will go into a 30 mphlimit and a pelican/puffin crossing
Immediately after that you need to turn left at the next set of traffic lights.
(the road opens out into a dual carriageway at this point -so you need the left lane)
Its abot 10 minutes walk from there - but all the nearer car parks and parking spots are either taken or you will need to pay for them.
Further up the dual carriageway if you dont turn into Leeds Rd retail park - there is a PC world car park on the left - and another retail park on the right - but you need to go around the gyratory to get into it. (not sure if there is limited time in that one though)
If there is a match on at the stadium though it can be a nightmare so maybe better off at Leeds Rd retail park on those occasions
hope this helps - but not sure which side of Huddersfield you are coming in from - I guess at the M62
If you are coming in to Huddersfield ina different direction then it could be a long way round to get to here. post back if you are coming in a different way and I will try to see which is easiest route in.Don't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0 -
I will be coming from Oldham, so yes I will be going on the M62. Thanks alot for those directions. Parking on the retail park sounds great - I think I will have a drive up this weekend to familiarize myself.0

You are still eligible to claim HB as you are a lone parent, although your student loan/grant is treated as income. Have you applied for all the available funding, including the Childcare Grant and the Parents Learning Allowance? Information on www.direct.gov.uk0 -
there's not much free parking left in Huddersfield ! The aforementioned retail park does have restrictions (and car park attendants) on match days but may also have them during the week so go beforehand and read the small print !
I used to live off Somerset Road (near Almondbury) and had people parking in the lay-by outside my house and walking to the Uni (about 10 minutes). PM me and I'll give you the street name

You can apply for Access to Learning funds if you run into trouble during the year. As a mature student and a parent, you tick two of their boxes for priority applications. Ask on campus at the student services office.0
