Total amount of airlines so far to go bust

Is there any way of finding out how many airlines have gone into liquidation within the last few months? I read only the other day about a small carrier in Ireland and another that flew out of the north of England ( I think ) but am curious to know just how many have gone to the wall. Also with XL being the latest one and possibly the biggest one so far it is getting pretty serious!!

Futura International is one of them (not just a small carrier in Ireland).

We're due to fly with them on the 2nd October. Just rang First Choice to see what will happen now and they are going to get back to me sometime today.

  • I'm always reading people saying 'god, don't know why anyone booked with them, writings been on the wall for ages - despite me never knowing the companies who go belly up.

Anyone predict the next airline to go under?

Who knows who will be next, think it's around 8 that have gone under since Christmas. There will be others though, it's a very bad week for the travel industry.

I suggest you look for some travel insurance that would cover you against airline failure. Perhaps contact your current insurers and ask if they could extend your cover (for an additional fee). Otherwise find a completely new insurance policy and see if you can get any refund from the existing one.

The standard advice -- make sure an insurance policy meets your needs before you buy it -- seems particularly relevant.

I think its just Futura Gael (based in Ireland) that are bust... for now.

Futura international are in financial difficulty and they did suspend flight for one day however futura international (for now) are not bust but are stuggling this has not been a good year for them.

Its such a shame if Futura international do,they they have been operating since 1989 and have been in no trouble until now. They are a fantastic airline with wonderfull commited employees, most which have worked for them for many years.

Information on travel insurance that covers airlines going bust for £5 in this climate you would be crazy not to!

Also confirms Futura has gone into administration certainly the company I had my holiday booked with has blamed their ceasing to trade on Futura failings
