Is my landlord being unreasonable?

Hi There,

We are moving in 3 weeks time, our current landlord had just informed us that new windows are to put in, in 2 weeks time. I'll be at work and my Husband will be at the new house decorating. I don't want to leave the window people alone in my house.
Am I being unreasonable? I think that our landlord should wait until we move out.

I'll be grateful for your views

  • Although inconvenient for you, and it won't be of any benefit to you either, he has given you plenty of notice.

How long are they going to be in the house for? If just a day can you not take a day's leave, work from home?

Also can you not transfer most of your valubles to your new house in 2 weeks instead of three, maybe storing boxes in your new garage or spare room?

This is probably the first appointment the landlord could get with them, and I expect he wants to re-rent as soon as possible after you leave. So although a pain and I do sympathise the timing is rubbish I wouldn't make waves as they haven't returned your deposit yet and could become picky.
  • he said they need 3 days. I've not paid the rent this month we agreed it'll be easier than giving us back the deposit at the end.

If we move stuff to the new house, I'll be worried about leaving stuff in an empty house.

It's probably me just being a worrier

If he's given you plenty of notice, then I don't think that that is unreasonable in itself.

Will the LL be there to supervise the work? There is no way I (as a LL) would allow such works to be done to one of my properties without supervision. I would want to see that I was happy with the finish & the tidying before I paid them (and I've used the same window company for atleast the last 10 years). Moreover, fitting new windows can be very messy - plaster and/or wallpaper can be damaged, & brick dust gets everywhere.

edit - 3 days!!! How many windows are they putting in?

I see what you mean, 3 days, bloody hell, yes I do think that is being a bit cheeky. In that case they probably could wait another week, also it will be easier for them to work when all your boxes etc have gone.

I am renting at mo, and hate when people in my home, especially as got pets.

Ok have now completely done a 3 point turn on this :D

I have got widows replaced in two houses and it took one day for each house . I cant understand why it would take three .

  • There's 10 windows and 2 doors.
  • I think that your LL is being reasonable. I also think that you are being reasonable.

However, given that your LL has let you off with the last month's rent and saved you the potential complications of waiting for your deposit to be returned, it's time to play fair and let the work go ahead.

I had 8 windows and a patio door fitted in less than a day - but it is a bungalow.
