You can use dreamhost to do registration and get a free .com/.org/.net and a years hosting inc 1TB a month bandwidth and 20gig of space (grows as well!) with loads of extras and freebies. I've been using them two years with no problems. It's about £12? for a year all inc. From a code point of view I've setup a referral code called 'DISCOUNTED' which waves any commission and gives you 100% discount (takes $97 off the insane crazy domain fee for 12months of $119) - hope thats ok with the board mods!Tim0

jamroll website:
Nothings free, right? There's always a catch, right?
I'm sure you're here thinking, free hosting with 5 gig bandwidth per month and 350mb diskspace. Yea right there must be a catch!
Well we do advertise on your sites, but it's only five small text links. You can see a example at the very bottom of each page of our website.

People need to be aware that when you use the free places you never "own" that domain. You are basically using it on "loan" so if you ever decide to move that doman expect a nice big charge to move it.
Register your own domain and pay a little bit of money. Then you will "own" that domain and can move it whenever and whatever you like not being tied into an companys charges.
I'd also recommend http://macdomains.net/ which is what I use...very good service.

123-reg don't give you full control over your domain... you can't change nameservers and such (at least you couldn't when I had them about 2 years ago)... its just forwarded. This means you can't use most of the features you'd get if you had hosting that used cpanel for example. Like all this "forwarded email" that should be handled by the server hosting the website, not the domain server... if that makes any sense lol.
They also remain as the registrant of the domain, so legally I'm not sure where you'd stand if they suddenly decided not to let you renew at the end of your term. I'm stuck like that with my domain at the moment. My old hosting company (eukhost.com) registered the domain on my behalf, the domain is registered to them. I wish to transfer the domain to another company and have myself as the registered owner... but they are refusing to do it.
I highly recommend lycos for domains (not hosting). The domains are fully registered to the customer (you get the nominet certificate if its a .co.uk) and its really simple to update any of the details and even nameserver changes happen almost instantly.~Diminutive0
