Do you have four diagnostic lights on the back of your PC?

Just get one with Vista and get used to it. Doesn't take that long. Most of the rubbish spouted about Vista is either done by people who have never used it and are just regurgitating what others have said or refers to its early days.

Ring Dell up and ask, they can normally still supply.

you may be able to get an OEM copy ox XP home or pro from ebuyer or cclonline . . which just means you install it yourself and go to the system builder for support rather than microsoft. which if you use the OEM copy yourself it classes you as the system builder.

but Vista home premium is pretty much OK too. The only conflicts myself and friends have come across is with games such as Call of Duty, Battlefield 2 etc - where the PC is used heavily and patches/ graphics card patches etc can conflict and it being cpu hungry too.

but for just basic tasks like excel it should be OK

  • Hi there

Dell do still do XP but they don't advertise the fact and you'll have to buy a 'business model' desktop so the actual base wont look that nice (Black and quite chunky).

I've just bought a Vostro 200 with the following spec:

Pentium Dual Core Processor 2.00 GHz, 1MB cache
    2048MB Ram
    250 Gb HDD
    17 inch Monitor
    Mouse
    Keyboard
    Speakers
    Wireless adapter
    XP professional

All cost £394.80 which I thought was good. XP is far more user friendly IMO. I have a Dell laptop running vista which looks nice but I just don't like it's functionality and seems to be generally moe unreliable.

As I said, they don't advertise this but just give them a ring and they'll build you a computer to the spec you require......

Id look at if you could fix your current one first rather than spending a couple of hundred on a new pc when it might not cost that to fix your current 1

There are definitely four green LED lights on the back of the tower. They might not all be lit, but they're there ;)

I have a Dell Dimension 8100 which is about 10 years old and still going strong - as it works, all four LEDs are glowing bright green. mine are located between the keyboard/mouse ports and the USB ports. Look at the back of the tower.

These are important as, if they're not all lit, those that are can help you to diagnose the problem.

And remember, that you have Lifetime Support from Dell. It's not "on demand" but if you have a problem, you contact them and they'll (eventually) diagnose it for you.

Have you logged on to Dell Support with the Express Code for your PC and run the diagnostics and/or enlisted support? That really should be your first port of call.

As I mentioned earlier, I have a "crappy" old Dell Dimension which is still going strong and doing all I want, so don't give up just yet. Do you have enough memory?
