You can also try these http://www.123-reg.co.uk . They are the cheapest for .co.uk names, it works out about £3 a year.

I use these guys and so does my web designer friend who buys domains like water! I can not fault them.

My domain is due for renewal in 10 days time and I'd still heard nothing from 1 & 1 so I've just given them a call.

They tell me that the renewal payment will happen automatically (so I need do nothing), and that I will only receive an invoice *after* the renewal. I'm rather surprised by this as I would have expected them to contact me shortly before the renewal was due.

Anyway, can anbody confirm that this really is how it works? I can't afford for this domain (and my email address) to suddenly disappear as the result of a renewal failure!!!

    Thanks

I thought that was the way that they did it, sell it to you cheap for 2 years and then when your 2 years is up, say "right, if you want to keep it, pay us some decent money or we'll sell it to someone else"

I could be wrong though but same thing happened to me and I just let it go!

It sounds like your renewal was sent by Nominet who handle the registry of all ".uk" domains.

I've received these periodically and they are for about £80 - that's how much Nominet charge if you deal with them directly.

Most people will have bought their domains from a company which is a member of Nominet and they are able to sell them for VERY much reduced prices.

Nominet's system seems to be triggered into sending these renewal forms out when your domain is about to expire. All you have to do is ignore the form from Nominet and instead go back to your original supplier and buy the renewal through them.

With 10 days to go I've not heard from 1 & 1 or Nominet. Do you know how far in advance of the expiry date Nominet normally send out these forms?

    Thanks

OK, 1 & 1 have just automatically renewed my domain for a further 2 years - it seems I was worrying over nothing.

The cost was £4.68 (£1.99 per year + VAT).
