I registered a site name a couple of years ago and paid £1.99 through 1and1. I have just had a renewal notice from them and it says if I want to continue it will be £80 for 1 year!!!!
Now, I don't care if I lose it, so I will let it go. But how can it be £1.99 then £80? Is it just because I registered it and they are trying to fleece me (as I suppose they expect I have a running website and don't want to lose the name), or is there another reason?

Dunno, but I have a .co.uk domain through https://www.easily.com (3 actually) and it's a tenner for 2 years ... it's basically e-mail and address forwarding so they don't actually host the site but if you're after the basics, I have found them a piece of cake to use for years now .... hth.
They must be charging you for hosting a website (ie webspace and all that), because even .coms don't cost that much. If you aren't using the hosting, tell them and get it cheaper.0 -
they are proberly tricking you into paying for hosting as well!
give them a call and ask to just renew a basic package. I have a few domains with 1and1 and there only small ammounts a year. I think your being tricked.0 -
These people are cheap
http://uk2.net/
but can only be contacted by email no phone nos. They are also cheap for hosting.0 -
uk2.net are cheap for a reason

stick with a sensable host, you get what you pay for.0 -
I deal with domain registrations and transfers for part of my job.
In my opinion, stay away from 1and1 and uk2.net. Thery are very difficult to deal with when you actually want to transfer your domains away etc.
I'd use a company like ukreg.com. They have good support for domains, and the website lets you fully control everything domin related.
As a general rule, stay away from companies who sell co.uk for less that a fiver. Its costs them £4.50 to register a co.uk domain so they will try and make the money back some how....If you're feeling down, you must be holding a duck.0 -
The best by far is https://www.34sp.com IMHO0

You can also try these http://www.123-reg.co.uk . They are the cheapest for .co.uk names, it works out about £3 a year.0

That can't be right. My own domain (also a £1.99 one with 1and1) is due for renewal in a few weeks, they'd better not try and charge me eighty quid!
How much in advance of your renewal date did they send you the renewal notice?

It maybe worthwhile checking the renewal note actually came from 1and1, and the address matches their stated address (and that the payment that was requested goes direct to them). I've had renewal notices for domain names, which were basically an attempt to 'hijack' my existing domain names, and they 'looked' very convincing, and came about 1 month before they were due to expire.0

I'd echo the previous poster. I've received many 'renewal' notices through the mail from something like 'american domains' ltd. it's just a scam.
I've had several domains through 1&1 for a few years now and I can't fault them. 123-reg are also good too.0
