Any tips on how to de-bug my laptop plz?...

Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to succesfully get rid of viruses and 'bugs' from my laptop?
I can turn it on (although it now takes about 15 mins to load up) and then everything sticks (ie. to open up the net or open a programme takes about 10 minutes at a time) and it occasionally decides to crash on me!
Obviously this is not a computer website, so the reason I am asking everyone here is because I dont want to have to buy a de-bugging programme that doesnt work and costs me a small fortune for nothing! Also, I really dont want to take it to some dude down the road who decides he is going to take advantage of my lack of knowledge and charge me a bomb to de-bug when I couldve maybe done it myself!
I am a 20-something girl who knows VERY LITTLE about computers and I.T so when replying to my thread, can you tell me in lamens terms please?!
I dont mind spending a little on a good programme that returns my laptop back to its original speedy-state when I bought it last November, or maybe I can do it myself with a few hints from you fabulous computer whizzes?! Either-way, the cheaper the better would be fabulous!

The first important thing to find out from you is what operating system you're using - I'd guess either Windows Vista or Windows XP ?0 -
