my post office lets me drop parcels off and then go back later when they've quietened down and pay for them, i can even go back the next day if i forget.

although it does help in the fact i used to work there :P
    helpful tips
    it's spelt d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y
there - 'in or at that place'
    their - 'owned by them'
    they're - 'they are'
it's bought not brought (i just bought my chicken a suit from that new shop for £6.34)
  • Any time I try to use Paypal's print a postage label, RM standard parcels ( i presume second class) seems to have a minimum charge of £4.20. So for example, on an item weighing 550g, should cost £2.08 second class, but paypal want to charge me 4.20 for it, over twice as much. I don't know if it is something I am doing wrong. Perhaps it is just that the paypal service doesn't offer second class?. The first class one comes up fine at £2.51 as it should be.

I would prefer to use paypal rather than royal mail online because paypal gives you the option to "do not display price" which is handy so that (some) buyers can't quibble about the extra 10p to cover packaging/handling!! I haven't been able to find a similar option on the royal mail site.

    Paypal don't have a 2nd Class option
.55Kg via Standard Parcels is £4.20 & your correct with first class at £2.51
  • Ok - this might sound silly but once you have packed and paid for postage via paypal do you just drop them in the post box? What about bits and bobs that dont fit - surely the post office wont be too chuffed with you filling up their bags when they are getting nowt in comission. Sorry its just because i want to do it this way just unsure of the whole procedure. :S Lol!

The post office still get their commissions, if the put them through the system, which all of ours are, as they're 1st Class Recorded
  • Ok, thanks, thats good to know. Another silly sounding question, if i pay via paypal (print the postage labels and all) do i still have to go through the process of queueing at the post office. Really this is the main reason im considering it as my local post office is always rammed with people often queueing outside too. TBH i would risk not getting a proof of postage slip and have to refund an item if it doesnt turn up (which has happened to me once out of about 100 items posted) for no queuing. Does that sound silly? Sorry its just i feel like i spend my life either at work or the post office and it really puts me off of selling online. Lol, i am probably just asking for the impossible though. :)

If you want proof of posting then yes you must queue at the PO and get your items stamped. If you use paypal postage and shove them in a post box then you have no way of claiming for loss against RM should a parcel go astray.

A lot of the time i do "risk" posting my pre-paid packages at a Post Box [especially if the items aren't that expensive] and to be honest, they reach the buyer no problem!

Just be careful with more expensive items though.........which i'll normally send via Recorded or Special delivery. You will have to queue then, to get the receipts stamped & for the item to go through the system.

When i do have to queue up though, i just try to go at a time when the P.O won't be too busy. But i know that can be difficult if you are busy working.
  • I have just discovered today that it is cheaper to post directly through RM than Paypal. A parcel that was checked for price directly with the RM site came out as £1.48 1st class when I entered the same specifications into the Paypal postage system it wanted to charge me £3 something for the same thing. Do paypal have a mark up?

I took 31 packages yesterday to the PO and was welcomed with open arms
Not by the queue standing behind you, I'll bet! :D

On a related c.o.p. theme, some of the main post offices have automated machines that weigh, price and dispense self-adhesive pre-paid stamps. At the moment, they do not dispense c.o.p.s, but I'm told 'the next generation' will - sadly nobody at the PO knows when they'll arrive.
