  • Oh! Bad luck Kat - I did two orders together for my first one, but they were both delivered on the same day, so wouldn't have helped the cash-flow situation. I wonder if you could have put in an extra order after your first one had been delivered.....a bit late for you, but may help someone else?

More tips which might be helpful to the ‘Avon Virgins’ ;) out there:

Bags. I find that the best bags to use are Tesco resealable (zip top), size medium. The brochure fits nicely in them side-on (except for C17, that is!) and you can just wrap the excess round. They’re not cheap at £1.09 for 20, but you can re-use them time and time again. I find some of the cheaper ones are false economy as they have to be replaced every couple of times. If you deliver to flats or other covered areas, then you can re-use the bags that the sale leaflets come in (curl the brochure up to get it in without splitting the bag) – you’ll be surprised how long they last; some of mine are on their 4th or 5th time!

When there is a ‘spend £15 and get a free bag’ or similar offer, don’t forget that if your customer spends £30 they only get one bag…….you order the other for yourself :D ! Add up all the amounts over the £15 mark and see how many freebies you can order! Watch it though if you are back-ordering to get a free gift – check the price, as it often goes down when the gift isn’t on offer, ie C1 Perfume is £15 with bonus bag, C2 it’s £12 without the bag! Doesn’t always apply, but worth watching.

If you have access to a laminator, make yourself a wet-weather calling sheet – it beats a soggy calling book any time. Using Excel, print your door numbers + a couple of ‘tick columns’ as a ‘2 to an A4 page’ landscape layout. Cut them down so you can arrange in an A4 laminator pocket with a gap between the two. Laminate then cut in half to give you 2 x A5 cards. If you use one of the wax ‘chinagraph’ pencils, they’ll write in the heaviest of rain and you can transfer your record to the calling book when you get home!

Also on the subject of rain, always carry a spare carrier bag even when collecting brochures in dry weather – there’s always one which has managed to get soggy, and popping it into a separate bag saves it making all the others messy.

That should keep you going for a bit! :rotfl:

  • I bought some bags out of poundland at the weekend - 80 medium seal ones - for £1 - absolutely perfect fit for the catalogues with no excess! I find the bigger ones get tattier easier, or the books and contents slide about in them.

  • Can I jsut ask, when it comes to hairdressers etc, do you just pop in and ask? I don't go to any in my area, so a bit nervous about going in to ask them as I don't give them any money.
    Thanks
  • I'm in Glasgow too and kinda wonder the same - I use city centre hairdressers so no knowledge of local ones and its usually very community centred? Ive considered it but think it may already be done!

  • I just get nervous about asking, hate people thinking I'm being presumptious! Think I will definitely need some other avenues though, out of 20 women in work, only have 2 orders, my mum and sister, and the streets I've been given, although they looked quite posh so not sure how good they will be...

My ASM recommended I got door to door in my street and ask if anyone would like a brochure. Apparently a girl canvasses our street already but 1) I've only ever received one brochure through the door and that was a year ago and 2) she has only 2 customers in a street of 250+ houses

  • Quick question, how do people get their deliveries when they work? Just that I cant seem to get them to put a Safe Location down at all and now i keep missing them. My neighbour is in so he said he would take it today but theres no guarantee that he will be in all day. What do you all do? or do you not all work full time. x
