  • I am wondering the same thing myself about tax. I work full time and I filled out the form on the Inland Revenue site, but I don't know what that means for tax?

  • echo - I certainly did laugh after that. However I also thought she could have just ticked the box and left it on her doorstep. Some people don't bother reading at all, surely it's simpler to tick a box!

By signing up as an Avon Rep, you are now running your own business so you need to register as self-employed with the HMRC within three months of starting and you will be required to complete a Self Assessment each year to calculate any tax you may owe - the telephone no. for HMRC is 0845 366 7840 and they are very friendly and helpful. If you do not register with the tax office IT IS AT YOUR OWN RISK!

If this is your only 'job' then you probably will not earn enough to pay tax/national insurance but you still need to inform the tax office that you are now self-employed.

If you are also in paid employment, your tax-free allowance will most likely be used up by your main job so you will be liable to pay tax (usually 20%) on your profits - this is all the money you make from your sales LESS your expenses and running costs etc so keep all those receipts as they can help cut your tax bill.

As a self-employed person, you are also liable to Class 2 national insurance contributions, something like £2.20 per week, but as you are unlikely to make huge profits initially you can apply for a Small Earnings Exemption - this does not happen automatically, you must apply for it.

If you claim working tax credit or any other sort of benefits, you may need to notify the relevant HMRC department but you will need to investigate this yourself or seek advice from the CAB or HMRC as every situation is different.

Keep all of your paperwork e.g. customer order forms, invoices, receipts etc, as you will need them for up to 7 years as part of your accounting records.
Don't know if it helps answer the question mind you lol!!

  • So I went back to collect the order from the woman who nabbed the book from next door. She left it outside as I requested and there is an order for £35.00:j The best thing is she ordered a £16.50 Ungaro perfume which I got in my Starter pack, so I think I will just give her my one, is that okay to do? I haven't opened it, thus bagging £16.50 for myself, is that right? It obviously means I can't order it so I am £16.50 less on my orders, but it does mean I get it completely to myself;)

I was going to do another drop tonight, but think I fancy a quiet night in, so I will do another one tomorrow when I go to collect the others.

Lol there has been a lot of posts since I came on last night!!!:D Went delivering books today, nearly done all of my territory as there are so many houses who don't want books and we had ordered too many lol! O well, will order a lot less next time!

For the query about the 3 for £5 offer on colourtrend - Avon automatically works out those offers for you, like with the buy one get one free's etc, just put the codes in for the individual items and Avon does the rest!

I always pay my account online, so much easier! And it lets you pay with solo which is good, as OH has an old account which he doesn't use with it being a solo card, so we are using that to put the Avon money into so that we know where we are with money. Definately agree with having a separate purse for Avon money, I keep one and a money tin with change in and means you don't loose any money!
Avon Lady since 2009 - I help on the Avon hints & tips thread to help other reps/new sales leaders as I was helped so much by it when I first started out :A
