Thank you all for your help.
My PC repair man prefers XP and I wondered whether he was stuck in the past but perhaps not. One option I have is for him to build me the tower only as I have all the other bits. He has done this before a number of times but I think this time it maybe cheaper to buy off the shelf.

Vista easy.....especially once you get use to it (like everything else) I very much recommend Vista Ultimate (just don't buy it in PC world)

For the home user, Vista Home Premium will be more than suitable. Will his wife really need Remote Desktop and Bitlocker encryption?
I can honestly say I have had far fewer issues with vista than with Xp and seeing as Xp is no longer supported (ie no more service packs) if there are still bugs they won't get sorted.

Yes it is until 2014, as per Microsofts support policy.
Xp is proven faster however are you actually going to notice the difference especially if your running Vista on a high end PC (I reccomend NO less than 2 GB ram but can be run on 1GB but no less)

It's not proven to be faster because that's a blanket generalisation with hundreds of thousands of variables.

I have both, if I had to choose one it'd be XP. Vista is irritating as hell when you first start using it, it warns you about every little thing, once you turn those functions off it's really fairly similar to XP.

Why would you want to disable the features that make Vista as secure as it is

I use a lot of different OSes in my day to day work as a developer. I run Linux (Ubuntu Hardy) on my main desktop, use a Mac regularly too, and have two laptops running XP SP3 and Vista Home Premium.

My favourite OS to use is Linux, but then I spend most time in it, so it's probably just because I'm most familiar with it that I like it the most. Mac OS X is very pretty, and sufficiently *nix like to be familiar to me too. Vista's not anywhere near as bad as I'd been led to believe. For a reasonably secure, fairly nice-looking and simple to use OS, I find it's a load better than XP, which I really don't like.

    Just my 2p worth ...

  • Better the devil you know! If your buying a new machine then you have the choice of XP or Vista. But if like me your trying to run your business from a laptop already running XP - don't bother! Plus old software might not be compatible with Vista either!! Sure it's got plenty of BLING, but I'm told by my tech geek, that it's resource hungry :-(

Personally I would go for XP for a low spec machine because it will run so much more faster than with having Vista. I have yet to see any real advantages of having Vista. In fact I seen performance worse using Vista than using XP and I have run both on several computer including a new spec machine I got last week

Yes it is until 2014, as per Microsofts support policy.Extended support is different to the support now (you lose some of the free support features)

It's not proven to be faster because that's a blanket generalisation with hundreds of thousands of variables.XP has been proven to run faster by many (i'll be more than happy to give you the email to the editor of PCFormat so you can tell him you know more)

And to rely on Vista secruity means your foolish....when a decent FREE antivirus and spyware are ample for most users (firewalls are !!!!)
If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right
  • I'll think you'll find a few more features in Ulitimate than just those two(such as BETTER back up for your files for a start)

You can still use Automatic Backup to backup your files and folders in Home Premium, which is ample for home use.

I don't care what the editor of PC Pro has let his hacks report. You can't just say XP is faster than Vista because what conditions were these tests performed under? There are hundreds, perhaps thousands of tests can gauge the performance of a PC.

    You missed the point again.

UAC is not a replacement for anti virus nor spyware protection UAC adds an extra layer of protection over such software.

It often is cheaper to buy off the shelf but I find building you own you end up with a better machine with better parts than the one that will out last a shop built.

    There is always one.

The title of the thread quite clearly states "XP or Vista".

It may say that in the title, but what is the problem with suggesting an alternative, after all it is a discussion forum.
