I have been using XP and was dubious about Vista after all the negative reports, however I have recently bought a laptop with Vista and am finding it relatively easy once you get used to it.

Vista easy.....especially once you get use to it (like everything else) I very much recommend Vista Ultimate (just don't buy it in PC world)

I can honestly say I have had far fewer issues with vista than with Xp and seeing as Xp is no longer supported (ie no more service packs) if there are still bugs they won't get sorted.

9 times out of 10 its user error especially if your not use to it......but i found vista far more forgiving than Xp if all goes wrong

Xp is proven faster however are you actually going to notice the difference especially if your running Vista on a high end PC (I reccomend NO less than 2 GB ram but can be run on 1GB but no less)

You may have heard issues of getting hold of drivers for hardware but unless your using old stuff you will NOT find that a problem.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right

I use a Mac, and wouldn't recommend either.

You could also try using Linux.

Despite what Microsoft want you to think, there are more operating systems than Windows.

Seems a but silly only trying out the Microsoft products, but alas, that's what many people do.

    There is always one.

The title of the thread quite clearly states "XP or Vista".

I don't know if you noticed, but here's a bit more to the thread than just the title, though I'm flattered that you appear to have only read my post.

The OP said he was buying a new computer. He's not sure what OS to get. I was just pointing out he has a wider selection than just XP or Vista.

I always thought choice was a supposed to be a good thing.

    Evidently you disagree.

Or do you just have some sort of a problem with people making informed decisions?

Xp! Without a doubt. Running 2 glitch free PCs on XP. A third runs on Vista and blue screens (crashing, dying and eating whatever I was doing) without warning at random but up to 15 times a day (its been known to do that in an hour) and nothing seems to stop it.

I have both, if I had to choose one it'd be XP. Vista is irritating as hell when you first start using it, it warns you about every little thing, once you turn those functions off it's really fairly similar to XP. Vista is more power-hungry so if you're doing anything that hogs system resources you might be better off with XP. If you're using any specialist/obscure programs you're better off with XP. Other than that there's really not much in it. Since your needs seem to be really basic you would be fine with either OS. If you're really worried you could always go into a computer shop and play around with a Vista pc before deciding (just ignore everything the sales people tell you!)

You have done something seriously wrong with that machine then..

We bought a new PC last month and had the same dilemma having only heard negative things about Vista.

However, Vista it is, and we have had no probs at all :D

What computers have you been looking at or are you building your own?

Not really started looking yet, but for wife, and will be something at lower end of price scale as she only uses now and again.

Will you not struggle to get an XP PC now, unless you are doing your own?

Just bought a new Toshiba laptop with XP.
