Please help! just been told my combi boiler has passed away!!

hi,

i'm new to this site and my knowledge of boilers is zero, here goes......

got my first house 4 months ago it has a heatline star 24 combi boiler fitted. had it checked out before we bought the property but now has got problems. first noticed no hot water a couple of weeks ago and got my mate (plumber) around. he bought a couple of parts for it' but no joy, basically i have various warning lights come on and off, pressure doesn't hold and when c/heating is on pressure goes up to 3/4 bar (dangerous im told so heating is off) made a couple of calls and found an ex heatline engineer local who is now a service engineer for intergas heating ltd. the engineer came in told me the pressure vessel has gone and the model is discontinued and suggests getting a new combi boiler. What is the best way to go about this? should i get a second opinion? how much should i be looking to pay? what boilers should i be looking at? Please advise im an absolute newbie to this and fear im gonna get ripped off. thanks

  • yes you can always get a second opinion... But probably he is correct if its old ?

Did the previous owners tell you how old it is ?

New boilers now are now condensing combi boilers and depending on your output (no of radiators etc) can cost from £700 to £1500

If you have to buy a new Boiler then the best are IMHO

Worcester Bosch :- great boilers,, Others may disagree...

But good luck with your old one first,,,,

  • If everything else is ok with the boiler and it's just the expansion vessel that has gone, it is possible tofit an external one into the pipework instead, you'll have to ask around your local plumbers/gas engineers, trouble is most will just want to replace the whole boiler, has anyone tried re-pressurising it?
  • thanks for the reply guys, the boiler is 5-6 years old, is it possible to re-pressure it and how much would it likely cost? many thanks for taking the time to help.
