new phone line in property
exchange has adsl, adsl max and llu talktalk
bt checker says the best speed i will get is 512k (but engineer will have to check)
whereas talktalk say i will get 6.3mb
can someone explain why there could be such a difference and which one is right
or are they both right?
thanks

as Talk Talk is LLU then they feasibly could offer a greater speed as it is their own equipment in the exchange. However BT quoting 512k suggests you live a long way from the exchange or there have been issues with the lines in that area in the past(or as it's a new line they are being overly cautious until you try it out). Samknows.co.uk offers some speed checking stuff based on postcodes but it is still all finger in the air guesses until you get a connection put in. Potentially go with one of the BT carriers with a 1 month contract (IDNet/Fast24 type people), see what speed you get then decide whether TalkTalk would be better(if you want to risk it that is...) Whatever you do don't get a 12 month+ contract with anyone0

thanks woby
i have decided to go with bt (i know really expensive)
however they have agreed that if i cannot get over 2mb then i will be able to cancel the contract with no charge
therefore thought it was worth the risk (even though bt are stupidly expensive)0
