Look out for this offer in your junk mail, I had one today. Plus £50 off a pair of glasses. Minimum spend £100 though. But they are both valid until December 31st.0

I've used a free voucher eye test at D&A annually for about the last 5 years.
I see the same optometrist, who I have complete faith in and get a very thorough test, using modern equipment, some of which I suspect the average independent might not have.
I get good advice (I wear contacts) and although there is always an attempt by the sales staff to sell me some glasses (as I don't actually have a pair!) - it is polite and not too pushy.
I would recommend them (well the branch I use anyway) without hesitation.
I have no relationship or connection to them in any way other than as a (non)fee paying customer - although I have at times signed up to their contact lens scheme.

I've never had eye test and no problems with my eyesight before but had been suffering from headache more often quite recently so managed to get the free voucher from M&S.
I went to D&A in Scarborough and I felt that the test was done thoroughly and very professional. After the test I was very pleased that my eyes are healthy and I don't need to wear glasses.0 -
D&A are struggling - big time. All of the staff, including the Optometrists have to clean the toilets in addition to mopping the floor, etc (with an exception of a few stores in England - probably just because they hit their targets and can afford a cleaner).
It made me cringe when I saw an Optometrist wipe the head and chin rest of a machine with a bog-standard wipe (no pun intended) to perform an eye-check for a teen.
This would not wipe the germs from his hands. Worse still - wondered if they were recycling and using the same wipes they used on the loo!!!
Urgggghhhhhh - the thought.
To think, I used to shop at D&A's (using the vouchers also), but not anymore!!!Invented tradition: Couponology

I have nothing against D&A nor do I have anything against toilet cleaning duties.
However, you expect people dealing with healthcare to be designated as cleaners, etc.
You wouldn't then think that cleaner would then go on to probe the delicate eye. Infections could occur. They are not trained in cleaning, and probably wouldn't know only to use certain cloths for certain areas, etc.
Would you appreciate your Doctor peering his head from the toilet cubicle and saying 'I'll be with you in a minute!'
It's an example of when money saving is just downright stupid.
This has just put me off shopping there ever again.Invented tradition: Couponology

I have just booked my fre test, but will be asking for a copy of my perscription. If they give it to me, then I will go to Dennies and order them. They are the people that most of the independents & majors use, they charge the same for individuals ast hey do for large customers.Never Knowingly Understood.

So, I am going for my eye test tomorrow - hope it'll be fine, I think it's worth giving it a try.
patman99 - what is "Dennies" - tried to google it - did not find anything - is it where you get your prescription glasses made or is it just frames you get from there? xxx0 -
I had my eye test today - fantastic. It was well worth giving it a go. The staff were very friendly, the optician was very attentive and helpful in answering any of my questions. I would give them 8 out of 10. (-1 - the selection of frames could have been better, -1 - the lenses were as expensive as in Boots). No pressure to buy frames, just left me to it, chose a frame, no hard sell on the type of lenses etc. Very nice, clean and attentive. Definitely won't go back to Boots now - they rushed through my last eye test and certainly made sure I didn't left without buying frames from them - I was stupid at the time, my new frames are gorgeous, cheaper and unlike in Boots - these in D&A are gonna be ready in a week (Boots took over 2 months to get my glasses made).
Thanks to all who posted the D&A free eye test + 20% off glasses voucher info (mine was from the August Cosmopolitan) on the forum. :T

I am surprised to hear such short-sighted (pun intended) criticism with regards to hygiene in a clinical setting. As I have stated previously, I am an optometrist, and I applaude the wiping of head and chin rests between patients. Personally, I always disinfect my equipment between patients using alcohol based medi-wipes. There is no way of knowing what germs may be left behind by the previous patient. Furthermore, I also use an alcohol based hand wash between patients. To criticise someone in a healthcare profession for being too hygienic is simply idiotic!0 -

I made it perfectly clear that I was criticising D&A's policy of forcing their staff to clean the toilets.
I will not go down the route of insulting you as you have done me. This is not what this site is about.
Feel free to misquote what I have written, but the original text is there clearly for everyone to see.
But if D&A are practising cost-cutting measures, I simply pointed out that they might be recycling wipes they've used elsewhere also, and an Optometrist shouldn't be forced to clean the toilets, then attend patients.
Surely, this is an important observation, not to be ridiculed or taken personally.
Sadly, there is no legislation for interpretation or lack of therein.Invented tradition: Couponology
