  • I've been going to D&A for the last 25 years and have always seen the same optician so we've sort of grown older together :D It's not the opticians that give you the hard sell it's the sales staff however when I had to become more savings savy and I've always thought that glasses have been one of the biggest rip-off's in the history of the world I just let them go through their sales spiel and when they come to the price I just say I can't afford that because it's far too expensive and when they ask where I get my glasses from I tell them Glasses Direct. Another way of saving a bit on the cost of glasses is if like me you're not a slave to fashion and are quite happy with the frames you have just get them re-glazed.
  • Hi everyone, I am a bit concerned now that I read about the D&A experiences, I do have the voucher and as I need an eye test - check up after two years I wanted to go to D&A but now - well I am not sure... I normally go to Boots where I pay £30 for a standard eye test and they also do a hard sell on their frames and so on. What shall I do?

Just had my free eye test done in D&A Maidenhead, yesterday. I felt that the eye test was done thoroughly. The result was very close to my existing prescription. Yes, they do recommend you to have a pair of new glasses, although with just a slight difference. Which was quite expansive. I just told her straight that it's too much, she didn't push further and was happy to give me a copy of the prescription. My son also got a free eye test, with the prescription exactly the same as his present glasses which was done at boots a few month ago, paying £20 and recommended him to keep the existing glasses. Great offer, remember, you don't need to buy from them.

  • Hiya, I just found this link to the D and A Website where you can get the voucher from.

You basically fill in the details and they email it to you. But it only lasts until 27/10/2008.

You also get a voucher for £50 off a complete pair of glasses when you spent over £100

  • Hi guys, thanks very much for your input about D&A. I am used to the standard tactics when it comes to the frames, lenses etc. so that's ok, it was just my concern that the eye test would not be a proper one. I need a special sort of lenses, they cost a lot to start with anyway, one eye needs -4.00 and the other one -1.00 so because of such a large difference between the eyes, the optician explained about the weight of the glass and the pull from the stronger lense to the weaker lense and so on, so they used to send it off to Japan to be made. The frames are not an issues for me, I am not the "fashionable" sort. It was just the eye test itself I was concerned about. Well, I'll give them a try and if I'm not happy I'll just have to go back to Boots.
Oh and KWJR - totally agree with you - NHS...You would think that in this age, standard health checks would be free...
  • I recommend Specsavers. My husband went there with a free eye test voucher he got in the press. No hard sell, you could walk out of the door at any time. Won't break the bank either if you do purchase-which of course he did. 2 for 1 also!!
  • I had a free D & A eye test in Deal , Kent about 6 weeks ago (coupon in Cosmo). I'm long sighted and only need specs for small print in dull light. The test was thorough and the optician told me there was almost no deterioration and I really didn't need to alter my glasses - result! No pressure or hard sell, just an honest examination for free...and the reception staff were really nice too!:T
  • I had free D & A eye test today also with no problems. No change in prescription. I did get some glasses priced up as I also had a £50 off voucher but then just said I would think about it - too expensive even with discount! No hassle from staff at all.

I was about to buy the magazine today in M&S when the store clerk advised me not to. He said I would be required to purchase glasses from D&A, told me they were overpriced, and advised me to go to ASDA to get my eye-test and glasses!

Ive just been to Huddersfield D&A with my voucher for a free eye test, had no problems at all, the test seemed to be like any other Ive ever had, no hard sell afterwards I didnt buy any though as the ones I wanted would cost £380 with lenses and the choice wasnt great so the assistant understood when I took my prescription and left the store. Everyone was very polite and helpful
