Computer slow starting up. 71 "processes" running

When I click on Cntrl+Alt+Del and look at the processes running page I find 71 entries. Could these be making my computer start up slowly or affecting my computer in other ways? How do I know which ones I can safely delete?
I've got 10 or more called SVCHOST.EXE and one, RPS.EXE, is apparently using 27,000K of memory while another, MSNMSGR.EXE is using 16,000K.
My other computer is running slow all the time. Is there a link to a reliable site that will give me hints on how to get it going well again, please?

This program has been mentioned to solve slow startups

Also this program will tell you what programs are needed or not

RPS.EXE is your antivirus/security from Virgin Media, so that is fine.
What else have you got that opens up on start up besides MSN Messenger.
If you go to start > run and type msnconfig , you can disable programs from starting up on system boot.0 -
anewhope - thanks for the idea of using msnconfig but do I need an exe after it or something, mine wouldn't run just with msnconfig
Thanks0 -
MSCONFIG. but be sure you know what a program does before stopping it.

Alan.
I had msn on my brain, obviously..
Yeah, it's MSCONFIG not MSNCONFIG0 -
if you are in msconfig - then quite a few programs that appear in startup can be unchecked. such as qttask.exe - which is quicktime (and damned annoying) realsched . jussched . they may also give you an idea of what they do by opening the window size so you can see where the program is running from.
to get another idea of what they do - google search the program exe name.
Also MSNMSGR.exe is sometimes a trojan - but also can be windows messenger (not the msn live messenger) - windows messenger can install with the operating system and is a pain to disable - but it can be done - again searching for msnmsgr.exe will show solutions for stopping itDon't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0 -
Ive found CCLEANER is the easist way to stop 'boot up' programs (And completely free):idea:0

I personally would get rid of the virgin anti-virus, that will give you the biggest gains0
-
but make sure you replace it with some other anti-virus such as AVG or Avast etc0

I personally wouldn't. You wont get a virus if you are half-way computer literate and dont go clicking on links from strangers and downloading russian mp3s.but make sure you replace it with some other anti-virus such as AVG or Avast etc
Check your system regulary using online on-demand scanners and enjoy fast computing 99% of the time
AVG is appalling and I wouldnt recommend it to my worst enemy. Avast is too fussy and throws up way too many false positives for most users0
