Hi,
I was wondering how easy is it to lay down the loft insulation roll or
should I get someone in to do it?0 -
Easy to do, but isn't the nicest of jobs tbh, it was absolutely murder for me with asthma. If you do it make sure you got good lighting up there to see in all the dark places, also crawl boards down and use them to crawl on so you don't go through the ceilings, old planks will do. Don't have any bare skin as it irrates the skin and possibly where a mask. I did neither because a I cant breath through a mask, I get aggravated by it and panic and it was so damn hot in the loft where I live that I sweat easily. I hated every minute I was up there I can tell you.
The reason why I had to go up was because the company that did the loft insulation via government grant didn't do the job properly and didn't cover the entire loft hence areas were allowing heat to escape and caused condensation on the edge of the roof where it meets the walls and water ran down both the front of the house and back of the house. I fixed it now with covering the area, I had to redecorate two rooms.
It ain't a difficult job to do just messy and itchy as hell. I am still working on the loft after two years putting up more insulation on the roof itself and boarding up to make a small play room for the kids.0 -

Its very easy, i did it a couple of weeks ago.
You just need to cover up all exposed areas of skin and wear a face mask to avoid the dust.
Places like wickes are doing a buy 2 get 1 free on most insulation so i ended up topping up our loft insulation for approx £600 -
We used insulation that came covered in thin plastic ... made the laying easy (we got it from B&Q). Removing the old stuff and clearing out all the rubbish the previous owners had left was not much fun though...0

Do try to wear a mask (and goggles) when doing it, you don't know whats going to be thrown up in fine particles.
Get some knee pads too.
.... and .....
do some stretches, you'll be kneeling and crawling at awkward angles as I found out to my cost :rolleyes:0 -
British Gas were doing an offer of fixed price loft insulation & cavity wall installation.
Not really much more than materials cost, if I'm correct.
Might still be info here http://www.house.co.uk

Don't know if you are in receipt of benefit or not but if you are you can get it done for free from Warm Front.
Warm Front2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040 -
We are waiting for fitting of loft insulation. This came about by a rep from local Council cold calling asking if we would like a quote... They sent round the National Home Energy Conservation Scheme who did a survey (took 10 mins) and said we had nowhere near enough insulation and would do it fully, inc fitting for £125. We are not on benefits and they didn't ask about circs - it was all down to the amount of insulation in the house not personal circs. We have quite a big loft in a 1930's house... so we jumped at it.
He gave us a business card telling us to ask friends/family if they wanted a survey.
Details are: National Grants Hotline Freephone 0800 085 5717.
We are in Northampton area but sure if you rang the number they can advise on other regions.
