The EMA is just for further education? So my OU course (leading towards a degree) doesn't count I guess... Is there anywhere I can look for similar help while starting OU course?

    Thanks

Full details of OU financial help are on their website. If you're on a low household income you could hope to get help with fees and expenses. Because studying with the OU is part time, you don't get any help with living costs as you'll be supporting yourself by working or living on benefits.
  • before i turned 19 i applied for EMA in September and i am going to be recieving it next week sometime! BUT can i apply for ALG as now i am 19?

So therefore can i apply for both?

    HELP lol thanks

  • The money for both EMA & ALG effectively comes from the same pot.

Consequently, if your birthday is any time on or after 01/09/89 you must apply for EMA, unless your parent(s) (or carer) income is OVER the threshold. You must exhaust EMA funding before you can move onto ALG. This means that even if you receive £20 or £10 on EMA, you will receive this for ALL of the year first.

You can then apply for ALG next year (provided that you'll be studying for your FIRST Level 2 or 3 qualification). If you're already qualified to Level 3, you'll not be able to receive ALG. See above for other funding options.

My son is currently on his Nat Dip 2nd year and receiving EMA. In his first year 2007/2008 he received bonus payments of £100 on 28th Jan 2008 and 10th July 2008. Does anyone have any idea when bonuses are paid for 2008/2009? I thought I had originally read somewhere on the Direct Gov website back in 2007, that 5 bonuses are paid over a 2 year study period.

You get 3 bonuses 2nd year, the first one you get in the sept just after they go back for 2nd year of study, I think other Christmas and not sure on 3rd. My Daughter used to get £10 but shes now 21 so some time ago, but I remember the first £10 in the second year she got just after going back

Thats what I thought, one Christmas (first year), one summer (first year), then Sept (2nd year), then Christmas (2nd year) and summer (2nd year). Maybe there has been a delay in bonuses just like there has been a delay in EMA payments.
  • There are two bonuses, not three, if I remember correctly.
