ASDA Christmas Savings Card

I picked up an ASDA Christmas Savings Card today as mentioned in the MSE article http://www.moneysavingexpert.com:8080/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1105297979,47896,

Reading the T&C, I just wanted to check that, as I see it, in order to get the bonus, I will need to spend the total balance of the card (£144 in my case) between 21st November (bonus date) and the end of the year. Probably doable for our household, but just wanna check.

From the T&C:

"4. The bonus amounts applicable only become valid when the card balance is £49, £97 or £144 as at the Bonus Day, and if the total value is redeemed between Bonus Day and 31st December."

Yes - you're right :D This is the second year that I've had an Asda Christmas Savings card and I'm really pleased with it.

  • Apparently there is no time limit this year as to when the cards have to be used by.

I was in asda tonight and asked the checkout assistant.

She said they can be spent any time after the 21st November and carried through to next year which is good.

Normally you have 5-6 weeks in which to use them ...................helps me out as I have 3 cards full :o

So you don't actually have to *spend* £144 on goods?

You just call into the store on 20th November, pick up a card, pick up a single cheap item (costing say £1) and on the way through the checkout pay the £1 and £144 on to the card. Then the next day go in with your card and it will buy you £144+6=£150 of goods. Is that it?

Can you load the card from your credit card, or will they only load it from cash?
  • Hmmmmm not sure if they would load it from a credit card and I would feel slightly embaressed doing it all in one go.....(mines been spread through the year ) though next year Im gonna save the money in an Isa and then load the card or cards in the month running up to the bonus date.

Let me know how you get on on doing it on credit card though .

I loaded 3 cards at the same time with my american express card (thereby making 2% on the card also) and the cashier didnt bat an eyelid.

Loaded mine up with £144 in one go from Mastercard.

I'm still not convinced. The assistants at our asda didn't really have a clue how the cards worked, and the T&C seem to be fairly explicit.

Might be worth asking a manager next time one of us is in store to find out if we do need to spend all the money on the cards by the end of year. If we then report back on here...
