Cost of cat booster injection

Options
I took my cat to the vet yesterday for his annual booster & was charged a few pennies under £38. Then on my way out today I saw a neighbour returning with her cats in a pet carrier. She had just taken them for their boosters, but to a different vet to the one I use. Out of interest I asked her how much she paid & she told me £25 each cat, but said she got a bit of discount because she has 4 cats in total.

Now I'm just wondering how much other people pay for the annual booster for cat flu for their pet moggies, so I can see if my vet charges way over the top.

I was quoted £200 by the vet for my cat to have one tooth removed. Wow, big shock & now I'm wondering if there is such a big difference in vet charges that I could get it done for less elsewhere. (Once I've managed to save up the money of course)
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

  • Ive worked within this animal business. The charges they charge will differ greatly vet to vet even within the same practice sometimes.
From a personal points of view and I do as much as I can at home as I have the confidence and training to do so, I would ring round a few vets.
When I needed my bithc spaying the costs differed from £80-£180
The operation and aftercare for a routine op such as this is the same no matter which vet operates.
For more particular operations you may need a certain vet within a practice as that is their specialism
My nearest 2 vets are very different. One is super high tec. Seperate waiting rooms for cats and dogs and even a councilling room for owners. The 2nd is far more basic, a single waiting room. This is the one I go to. Price isnt the issue here but for the super high tec vets I know they have done tests and traetments that are not needed. At least at the vets I do go to he is upfront and honest.
Somethimg you need to remember is that vets spend longer than Drs training and are in debt (usually) when they qualify. They have the market cornered after all we will always need vets like funeral directors I guess.
Not to add more to the situation but I can say the actual cost of the serum for the jab is less than £1.50p
Something I saw a lot of is clients phoning the vet nurse for advice and if the condition isnt too serious trying treating at home. After all most animal medicines are the same as humens and can be brought in a chemist.
One last thing a lot of repeat medicines can be brought on line much much cheaper. It is now an offence for a vet not to give you a prescription which then gives you the channce to shop round online or even at the chemists.

Thanks for that narabanekeater - some really useful info there.

One thing though - I'm always hearing human medicines are really not suiable or safe for animals, is that not the case or is that just what we're told?

I would also recommend phoning vets. I have 3 cats and 3 dogs, and when the dogs got into a large batch of chocolate (poisonous to dogs) instead of dropping everything and rushing them round, I rang them for advise. Sorted it all over the phone, and instead of paying for the consultation etc, I paid about £2 for the charcoal!

It might just be my vets that are good, but 8 times out of 10 I ring up and end up not needing to go in.

Also, as narabanekater said - online pharmacies! I was recommended Synoquin for my older dog. It was going to be around £20 a month from the vets. I can get hold of 3 months supply for around £24 from https://www.bestpetpharmacy.co.uk Their service is top class and free delivery too.

We have four cats and pay about approx £24 each cat. This also includes a check up/teeth check etc.

    From memory neuteuring/spaying was £25/30.

We use companion care which I believe is a chain and have found them to be very good and quite good value (it only got expensive for flea things etc as we have the four)
    Hope this helps.

Just checked to see how much it cost for the last time one of our cats had a booster and it was only £14.04 + VAT . Seems very cheap compared to what everyone else has mentioned

Yeah, it does! Was that for the three jabs? Where are you geographically?

it pays to shop around when your animals need treatment,I run a small animal rescue centre, our local vet charges £40 to get a male rabbit nuetered,so we use a vet 6 miles away he charges £ 26.00,when we had to have our dog nuetered our local vet was £140.00 the other vet was £60.00. niether of them knew we were a rescue centre,we also take in baby hedgehogs for the winter and when we asked the local vet if he would charge us if they were ill and needed treatment he said yes he would, the vets 6 miles away said they never charge for wildlife. Our local vet drives a porche the other drives a T reg volvo,I wonder which one loves animals before money. So we always shop around you have to when you over 70 animals like us.
