Laminate floor buying help/guide/anything really!

Do you have a Makro in your area? They sell a beautiful real wood floor for £11 sqm, you can sand it several times (you can't sand laminate) and will last you a lifetime. It comes in oak and and chestnut. I had it installed in my flat and love it! I am not a fan of laminate to be honest with you...0

we have just laid some and we took the skirting off cos it looks neater also you definately need a jigsaw, and the spacer blocks come in handy as it stops it moving apart we got a good deal off a bloke at a carboot in may 30packs(which sold at £30 per pack)for £130 and he delivered it for us so far we have done the lounge, dining room,a kids room with it and we have enough to do two other rooms it was our bargain of the year, also my OH mate made him a pull tool at work which has been invaluable0

I bought some reclaimed oak flooring from a reclamation yard. It needed sanding down but I've just finished the first coat of wax and it looks fantastic. Will last a life time and easy to maintain.

We have the quick step 700 in the living room and it has been down 3 years. It is wearing well and looks as good as the day it was fitted. If we can afford it we will be using this again as I have seen other makes in friends homes and it is chipped etc.The best bargains are priceless!!!!!!!!!! :T :T :T0

Thanks again guys for all your advice ... you've been great!
I'd like to also know how long the process takes?? Can it be done in a day? Like, just lay the floor down and move all the furniture back in straight away?
I am stressing out now as there is a lot of ... erm ... stuff .... that needs shifting to empty the rooms and I don't want to do it 'cos I don't know where to startStripping walls, painting walls - getting rid of the rubbish etc etc. Plus, I think the kids wardrobes were built in their room and not sure if we can get it out without pulling it apart!
Is it gonna be a case of lots of black bags ... stuff 'em and then unstuff them and making sure we don't chuck the wrong ones out! Ahhhhggggg!!!
Any good organisers out thereI can say whatever I like here ... 'cos no one can see me .. ner ner ner ner ner !!!....How do you know I ain't sitting here butt naked?!?!I thunk I've made you think for a minute!:j :rotfl: :j0 -
Yes it can be done in a day, the more awkward shapes in the room the longer it takes though, due to extra cutting. We did two bedrooms, one small with bunk beds and our bedroom both in a day, and the hallway the same. Just did the finishing off like laying the quadrant around the skirting the following day.
Its surprising how much you can cover once the first one is laid, the time is taken when cutting which is long once you measure and cut with a jigsaw.
I laid around the edges for the gap cardboard folded over from the laminate flooring and left in place until the final piece of the flooring is laid. Also don't forget to stagger the flooring rather like laying bricks so the end of the laminate isn't too close to the start of another if you get what I mean.0 -
Have a look at http://flooringsupplies.co.uk/ - they claim to not be beaten on Quickstep prices (and can supply loads of other ranges, too).
I bought oak wood flooring from them the other day - they deliver very fast, even if you need small additional quantities. They also take any surplus back, but you need to pay for the transport and a £27.50 re-stocking fee.
EDITED: I just notice they have a "trade login" on their website.......probably means there are better prices if you have a business and can convince them you trade in floors? :cool:0 -
Thanks again hun ..... got to get 2 rooms at least done in a day and they are both without any awkward shapes! so should be pretty easy - May get the stripping and painting done tomorrow and then do the floors next weekend when HB have 10% off - or go for B&Q this weekend. I am just stressing 'cos I keep walking past the kids room and see all the crap ... i mean toys  and oh my god! I am never gonna but them anymore again! :rolleyes:I can say whatever I like here ... 'cos no one can see me .. ner ner ner ner ner !!!....How do you know I ain't sitting here butt naked?!?!I thunk I've made you think for a minute!:j :rotfl: :j0

I have a trade account a both floors2go and flooringsupplies and there isnt much between them on the quickstep range. Quickstep will recommend you use there combifloor underlay (plastic and 2-3mm green foam underlay attached together) as if you dont it could void your guarantee......however official line from quickstep is that if you have a problem with floor and its due to another underlay used, guarantee void, if problem not due to 'others' underlay, guarantee ok.
I would recommend on a concrete floor to use Excell gold underlay available at Floors2go. It has a built in membrane and others a good thickness and sound proofing quality. If you can get an online price for quickstep cheaper than Floors2go, they will often match. Dont let them talk you into buying there bead adhesives or wooden doorbars as these are cheaper elsewhere.
37 sq m will depend on the coverage that a pack gives....with quickstep coverage varies from 1.5 to 1.9 ish sq m a pack. Quickstep 700 is there now 'budget range' but for not much more, the 800 range is probably a better bet.
Wouldnt recommend either homebase or BQ....this is having laid many types and manufacturers....Wouldnt recommend Floors2go own range either.....its a pain in the backside to fit , especially in tight spots......Quickstep all the time!

I noticed this thread in our website referrers list - 5 people visited our site from this!! As you can tell I work at Flooringsupplies.co.uk, and thought I would just post a courtesy message here.
gardnt1 is quite right in our opinion regarding "Quickstep all the time". Its the only laminate floor we supply, for a good reason. It does not give us any problems, it fits together great, and looks good too.
I wont go on as Im sure I will breach the board rules, suffice to say you know where to find us if we can help.
Thanks
