Going to KL in February for stopover on way out and back from New Zealand and wanted to buy a digital camera.
Does anyone know if its cheaper than here and worth waiting to get one there?
Also anyone have any experience of made to measure suits in Kuala Lumpur.
Any suggestions very welcome.
Thanks

Yes... digital cameras will be cheaper in KL, but it can present problems, thus weigh up the amount you are going to save on the camera against the following.
There are lots of deals around just now in the UK and if you buy a camera in the UK, you can "road test" it here, familiarise yourself with it, upload pics, decide what add ons (memory cards etc) if any you need, and generally make sure you are in a position to bring home top quality pics.
If you are aiming at a high end camera where the savings are, you could look at pricing them up prior to leaving, however if the saving is not that great, do you really want to spend your stopover in a BRILLIANT city, searching out a deal to save a few £££ when you should be having fun and taking pics instead?
If you opt for a purchase in the UK, you can always pick up additional battery packs and memory cards in KL, as they represent great savings.
Just my thoughts

Thanks for the advice. Am looking to buy a "high end" camera so will probably price it up here before I go then check it out there. Already have an adequate digital camera so will still be able to take plenty of photos.
Also am spending 5 nights in total in KL 2 on way out and 3 on way back so will have lots of time for shopping for bargains as well as seeing the sights.
Glad to hear there are plenty of tailors.
Thanks again

Fake dvds, cds,ps games etc about £1 each in chinatown( even ones not yet released )
designer clothes in the shopping malls are cheaper than here.
They say KL is the cheapest shopping in the far east.travelover0 -
There are a chain of shops called "Factory Outlet Stores". A bit like TK Maxx. Some great bargains on genuine designer clothes.
Don't forget the free trip up the Petronas Tower. Get there early to get you free ticket.(".)0 -

KL is a great place to shop and some good advice has already been given. I've been there a couple of times so would add:
- Don't buy trainers or shoes from Chinatown. They will be fake and will not be good for your feet. Similarly the quality of T-Shirts etc may vary so don't expect them to last.
- If you buy sunglasses (i.e. fake Oakley or whatever) from Chinatown then remember they probably haven't got a UV coating and so can actually be more dangerous to wear than wearing none at all (as your eyes open wider as they are darker, letting more UV's in).
- Buying fake watches is a lottery. I've got a few good ones, but I bought from a specific guy recommended to me. They often have different price ranges for the same watches. The more expensive ones will be better. They will often have prices on the back that bear no resemblance to what you can get it for, e.g. the "Breitling" I'm wearing now was marked as over RM1500 and I paid about RM100 for it.
- HAGGLE! Especially with market traders and individual shops. Chain-stores will not give you a "best price", but traders will. They will always come down in price. I'd usually at least halve what they are trying to sell it for. If they won't budge (especially in Chinatown), just walk away. They will either come after you and offer you a better deal, or you can go to another guy. There are a lot of people selling the same things there - just buy off someone else.
- Most pirate DVD's will be crap quality.
- If you buy any PSP games (legit or not) they won't work in your PS2 unless it's been chipped.
- KLCC Suria Mall (by the Petronas Towers) is very expensive, but the designer brands may be marginally cheaper than in London.
- For good general bargains head to one of the other malls, like Mid-Valley Mega Mall. It is HUGE and full of bargains. The department stores like Jusco are worth a look.
- Try and check out a "Pasar Malan" (spelling?), which is a night market. There are a few here and there and are good fun.
- For good arts/crafts type things, goto Central Market.
- If you are paying more than £2 for a meal somewhere (excluding drinks) then you are eating in the wrong place! One exception is the revolving restaurant at the top of the telecoms tower. Well worth going to but quite expensive. You have to book and there is a dress code (i.e. no shorts) and try and go on a clear day.
KL is great place and I'm sure you'll love it there.0 -

PSP games wont work in your PS2 regardless of whether it's been chipped or not!
