Virgin BB, what speed are you getting?

We've recently switched from TalkTalk to Virgin BB. With TalkTalk, we were getting around 5.2Mb of the up-to 8Mb that was advertised. That's pretty much the bare minimum we need.

I spoke to someone in Virgin sales before we switched and was assured that Virgin could provide at least that speed. So I went with the L package (up to 10Mb). The guy who came to install it also that it shouldn't be a problem.

I'm using the new BB now, and we're getting 3.5Mb at best. I understand that 10Mb is a bit of a pipe dream, but a third of that? That's just ridiculous.

Is it just me, or is Virgin crap in general? I live in North London (zone 2), so it's not like we're in the middle of nowhere.

I will phone them this week, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

What sort of speed is everyone else getting?

  • Cable. We specifically chose cable because we want to get rid of the land line.

you should be getting pretty near the 10mb if on cable. Try doing a speedtest on a few different sites. The best method is to download something from a newsgroup and see what the speed is. There is no way you are getting 3.5mb on a 10mb connection. I am on 2mb and pretty much get the 2mb at all times!

We are on the 20mb cable and I get about 19 as tested using speedtest.bbmax.co.uk. But that is on a hard wired computer. If using a laptop via wireless I get no more then 4mb when doing a test. But the tests are not that accurate. The only real way to tell is to do a test whilst directly connected to the Virgin modem (not the router).
