Ok, hope it goes well, I installed it in a test snapshot to see what it would do, takes it's time scanning, but seems to be very thorough.Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

Hi TT
Just to update you and anyone else who has taken an interest in my stupidity.
Downloaded PC Inspector and started the search about midday Monday. At 9pm last night there was still about 100 million of 302 million sectors to still be searched. When I got up this morning my comp had the start up page showing, my first thought was there had been a power cut during the night but on checking, this could not be the case plus the comp would not restart after a power cut anyhow. So, I figure the PC Inspector restarted after it had finished. The problem now is I cant find the photos I don't know what the PC Inspector did with them, I gave it a file name to put them in as asked but cant see them anywhere.
I have to go to work now and I will have a better look later but in the meantime anyone who has any ideas I would be most grateful.

I installed and ran this one as well, as I am not familiar with the program myself, and have not seen anything written on the net about it's success in discussion boards I frequent. Like you I found it takes a very long time and I had to leave it overnight.
However upon my return it had completed successfully, you should be left with the UI on screen, if that's where you left it, showing 100% done, secotrs to scan and sectors scanned equal and the number of pictures recovered, in my case this was about 1700 amounting to 5GB. I have to confess I was a little surprised it had returned so many tbh.
Anyway to your situation, what exactly do you mean by the "Start Up screen"?
To me that means, in XP, the Blue "Welcome to Windows Screen" and even if a PC reboots it should be past that and on to the desktop, or are you referring to the start screen of the "Smart Recovery" startup screen?
My own experience leads me to ask how much free disc space you have, and how much space would all the photos take up if recovered, given that I had lost nothing, and thus had nothing to recovery, in theory, it still managed to recover 5GB, and I use a file shredder periodically which may suggest I have less than normal to recover. The difference between this program and others I have tried is that it recovers as it goes. Most other programs I have tried simply map the files and only recover those the user selects. If the program ran out of free space it may have encountered problemsHope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

By far the fastest I have used recently is Photorec.
Google MjM Photo Recovery (the download is called photorecovery.zip), which is open source and therefore legal to download and use freely.
Couldn't believe the results from this using the quick scan. I've used all sorts of recovery software in the past (including PC Inspector), and for ease of use this was great.0 -
I managed to delete a whole lot of photos as well.
I was a bit sceptical, but for just over £6 (and I was desperate to try anything) -I took a chance and bought this
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000RZNT60
Pleased to say I got all my pics back
and I can re-use the programme if necessary in future. There are probably other programmes out there as well but this did definitely work for me 0 -

Unfortunately, if you look at the small print the postage is just over £3  on top of that but I was well chuffed that it did work.
Best of luck! I can imagine how you felt - I was distraught until I realised there were ways to get the pics back. It was a great thrill when they all appeared again! I didn't lose as many as you have - but it is an easy programme to use so should work. Fingers crossed for you. Try the free one first - but I can confirm that the one I bought did work0
