I have just applied to the OU, where they do a series of courses. The basics course is 10 weeks long and starts next month, that's what i intend to have go at. Then maybe in the New Year go futher.
It is T183, Design and the Web.
You could also have a look at the freely available Web Standards Curriculum at http://www.opera.com/wsc/ which gives a great grounding in XHTML / CSS standards-based web development."In all affairs it's a healthy thing now and then to hang a question mark on the things you have long taken for granted." - Bertrand Russell0 -
sorry brand new to the forum and didn't realise I was breaking the rules.
and thanks to everyone for your comments. As i said I'm figuring things out as I go and my website is not being advertised and not ready for launch at the moment. I know it looks "cheap" and at the moment it's because I can't afford to pay for people to help me and I'm learning things as I go. i work 2 jobs and therefor taking a class is not an option at the moment.
I appreciate your comments but in the future the people who have good knowledge of programming and scripting should maybe state your critisms in a more eloquant fashion instead of calling something "cheap and unproffesional" which is correct but when not followed by ideas or help is just an attack and is not constructive. I'm sure you appreciate how daunting and hard scripting can be for a beginner especially when trying to create a website with multimedia on it and not a simple webpage. I am learning slowly and when I can i will be trying to rewrite the website.
..i'm sure my post will start a petty argument which i really don't want it to do as I appreciate that many people on here could be of some help to someone like me.Skint :money:0 -

And there is the problem with making your own site. It will look rubbish and unprofessional. Simple - your first few sites tend to be a bit amateur looking.
Do you really want your business website to look like it was someone's first attempt? Consider a website an investment, or an advert. You'd pay £500 for a decent advert placement, so why not a website?0 -
I am also looking to make my own website. I previously worked for an internet company where I used dreamweaver to create product pages, but it was mainly template driven and understand that the detail behind it is far more detailed.
In terms of a domain address. What would people recommend is the best method to purchase a domain name, I have a few in mind, but they seem to be taken, but not being used, is this people buying it to see on when someone like me comes along?
Also, .com, .co.uk or .eu ... does it make a difference to you, really?0 -
That w3schools is quite good.0

Take a co.uk or a .com, and make sure
1.it's short
2.and easy to spell.
I seen a website recently for "quintessential finance" - and they didn't shorten it..
I've have clients who insisted on using .net and .orgs and I can't even remember what it ends in, never mind a prospective customer.0 -

96 quid an hour? no wonder you spend so much time on this forum.
But you're right. a good clean tidy website will last you any number of years and will pay for itself many many times over.
The amount you'd would spend in print media periodicals will dwarf the price of a website.
The information that your prospective customers will get from good photos, well described products and services, free 24-7 contact methods (email and formfill).
Downloadable catalogues, portfolios of prvious work.
Doesn't need to be fancy. In fact the less novelty Flash stuff, the better.
Just give the customer the information they want in the best light you can.0
