  • Depends on how complex a site you want, theres lots of free web creation tools at www.downloads.com (do a search for em).

You can hard code using HTML in notepad.

Frontpage express is MSs webcreation sw which used to be free (not sure now).

    plus many many more

You will need a host, and you usually get some web space on your ISPs server, they may have intergrated tools so you can create basic site with there templates.

if you use a seperate piece of software you will prob need to use a FTP application to upload your pages to the server.

    Hi Funkimunki,
you may want to have a quick look at the forum rules (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.html?f=10). There's quite a strict policy on no advertising.

  • Funkimunki - your site is a typographical mess.. i wouldn't use it as an example of 'what you can create using a basic tool'

oh yeh, and you can't post your own firm's url in here

    Agreed,

Hardly a shining beacon of the well made, professional look. Is it? That looks cheap, and the mistakes are wholly unprofessional.

This is why I would advocate learning HTML/CSS and hardcoding your own site. It may take a little longer, but at least you'll see every little mistake, AND know how to repair it. Really is worth it in the long run.

Taking a look at the source code, even as a non-expert I could see there was far too much scripting put in there even when absolutely nothing was going on on the page. That's the problem with relying too heavily on automatic/WYSIWYG tools. Also a few broken things which you'd probably only be able to fix if you understood the underlying code in the first place.

  • I have never done any Web Design, but was thinking of having a go, i thought i might be able to work from home doing it.
I have just applied to the OU, where they do a series of courses. The basics course is 10 weeks long and starts next month, that's what i intend to have go at. Then maybe in the New Year go futher.

http://www.w3schools.com/ covers just about everything (including design principles) with very basic primers/tutorials going to any depth you want.

I had a similar problem to you - I thin found 2 great books which will get you up and running in NO TIME!

The missing manual series for the web which are:

Creating web sites - the missing manual

    and

    CSS - The missing manual.

use https://www.find-book to find cheapest place for it.

Used together you should get going in no time. Nothing better than getting a website up properly.

For editing the html I recommend Notepad++ - look it up in google.

I host my site with Qiq - cant recommend them enough for their control panel and features list - £29 for the package I got but I used a code to get it half price - available on the web freely. However, you need to think about if you want to use a linux or microsoft hosting package. I use linux as plenty of free add ons avaialble for the site!

    Good luck! :)
