You could just hook up the old video camera to a DVD recorder and do the transfer in a more straightforward fashion.
And from a purely subjective point of view, if you are buying a new computer, buy a mac. Beautiful design, excellent operating system, and something most people ignore - very high resale value when you come to upgrade. Old desktop PCs become worthless in a very short space of time, but a 2004 iMac listed on eBay will still command nearly 50% of its original value today.0 -

Nah, mate us less tech experienced people are still somewhat wary of 64 bit OS, as there is still I believe a fair amount of software that has issues with it. Bound to be getting better by now I know, but we're still wary.Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

Update:
I managed to find time to call into the Apple store and then John Lewis. I must be honest, I nearly had a rush of blood to the head and bought an imac! I had a demo from a very nice lad and he showed me how easy it was to transfer and edit. It was very impressive indeed.
I then went to JL and a very willing young lad showed me an HP system. 4 gig quad system, for £999. It seemed like that was the PC I needed but my heart was still back in the Apple store!
I might ask at my local PC shop about upgrading but the imac was soooo tempting.
Thanks to all that replied to my post.0 -

you may be right, only been using it since June, so far everything I've tried has worked..

I suspect it will become more and more the norm, as applications are devloped which require more and more memory. I think Microsoft has not pushed 64bit and as such software vendors have dragged their heels a bit on developing drivers for it. But I have noticed in tech related sites where people carry a signature listing their system setup 64bit is becoming a lot more common
Unfortunatley for my part one of the main softwares I user is niether fully Vista certified, nor fully 64 bit cpompliant although some people are reporting it working ok, so I stick with 32 bit XP for now.Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

£1k for a new PC is a lot of money, you already have a monitor, keyboard and mouse, local PC shop should be able to build a much better spec machine for the money JL are quoting, or, even better, chose a budget and build your own!

Does seem pricey, it would need to be pretty high end for that price 2.8Ghz Quad, 500GB hdd, and a high end graphics card, even then, it wouldn't be cheap.Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

Is it mostly the lack of PC memory that's the problem or are there other factors? Is the software I'm using any good or can it be bettered?
My son has just bought a new Toshiba laptop and the salesman (JL) told him it was just right for the job I want to do. ( I suppose he would say that!) He paid £400 for it and it seems fast compared to my desktop.0
