Might some of the anxiety be due to him leaving yur Mum. Over the years married couples tend to have their own daily rituals and it's easy to feel guilty if the status quo changes. Might he be feeling a bit guilty as the man leaving your Mum who is obviously anti-travel of this sort.

I'm not saying anyone is putting any pressure on him to feel this way - it's just a psycological reaction.

I have to fight the feeling every time I leave my family for a once a year weekend work contract I do. Despite doing it for the family, I still feel guilty for changing their routine (even though I've been doing it every year for 8 years now and they are always OK!)

It could well be. I think that my Mum (deep down) is quite resentful of him going off and following his dream - even though she has absolutely no interest in going with him.
At our end, we've offered my Mum as many meals as she wants with us, or if she wants to pop in, we're always in, type of thing. PLUS, in my Mums village, shes just found out thsi weekend that quite a few things/trips are being planed for her. That may make things 'esaier' for my Dad in that respect.

  • my grandad was travelling on his own up till he passed away at 95, he used to go to instanbul and places, i believe it was keeping himself busy that kept him alive so long.:T
my mom does a few of these tours and has done america, morroco etc with her friend. although it is nice to have a companion i think it may be better for your dad to do it alone, better than having someone who doesnt share your dream and you have to cater to them anyhow:confused:

im sure once he actually gets there he will really enjoy it as tours are usually organsised to keep you busy and hopefully he will meet other people, maybe a couple will take him under their wing as lots of blokes feel a bit lost for banter once the women go off shopping etc.
just get him to carry a pic of your mom to warn off the lonely widows;)
hope he has a lovely time!!!

    Thank you.

BTW, his reason for going in Autumn, rather than Summer ? He has a really large lawn area and if he goes in September, my Mum won't need it doing whilst he's away.
