Stoves and air vents

Hi all.
We're looking into getting a stove fitted, possibly with a boiler. I've read that if a stove gives out more than 5 kw, you need to have an air vent fitted.
Am I right in thinking that the air vent would be fitted on an outside wall?
If this is the case, I think we'll have to forget about the boiler option and get a stove under 5kw as our outside wall is about 2 feet thick stone.
(The wall the chimney is in is an inside wall.)
Thanks.

Hi there, you can install a 5kw stove with BB without the requirement for air vent, upwards of 5kw, vent is required. You can hire a core cutter, I reckon 100mm cutter will be suffice for your needs, drill at the back of where stove will be installed, I reckon the best place actually, air close to stove where it is required, hole will also be hidden from view. I would then install an outside vent cover, one with insect screen (fine mesh) fitted, to keep the creepy crawlies out, and seal with mastic!
Then try to get your hands on 100mm metal pipe cut to size of wall thickness, if pipe is steel, copious amounts of hammerite paint to stop corrosion. Slide this in and job done!! I have similar wall thickness as you have, have hired a core cutter for a day for drilling two 100mm holes, for me it a was not an easy task, but got there in the end in one day.

Thanks for your reply. The core cutter idea is one I was unaware of, so that's helpful. Unfortunately, cutting a vent in the back of the chimney would lead to a hole in the dining room as the chimney is in the centre of the house! The only outside wall in the room where the stove would be, is at right angles to the chimney wall (and has a door in between).0

Oops, silly me, I didn't notice the part about inside wall in brackets! Just out of curiosity, what kw of stove do you have in mind?0

We have a 4kw stove burn it hard it gets very hot. I think you can get it with a back boiler?

Lol. The chimney did used to be on the outside wall, but at some point in the past an extension was added to the house, so now it's in the middle of the house.
To be honest, I'm not sure yet what kw we're going to be looking for as I haven't measured the room yet, but I'd like to get one with a boiler fitted if possible in order to use it to heat water and radiators because we're running on oil atm.We have a 4kw stove burn it hard it gets very hot. I'm actually in the throws of preparing to install a stove, nothing purchased to date. have you looked into the aspects of running stove to heat water and rads? I was hoping to buy stove with BB to heat water only, point is, with having NG for heating rads & water, to add the stove can be a fairly complex task!
I'm going for heat only via MF stove, I wish I had a blank canvass to play with though, I'd have the best of both worlds installed from the beginning.

I don't think it would be enough to do everything.
With a stove that small you would need another alternative. The measure of love is love without measure0 -

Not yet, still in the very early stages of looking into all the options. The ideal would be to have a dual system, so that the stove is used for the water and heating during the colder months, with the oil as a back up/summer water heating option, but the initial costs of doing that sound really expensive.I don't think it would be enough to do everything.

Thanks, I didn't think it would be enough.0
