  • i'm trying to find out when I had mine (by searching my posts :o)

I'm dreading having mine replaced - I've only just settled down mood wise after a terrible time.

    I think i'd prefer a hysterectomy.

Have you gained weight with yours?
    de do-do-do, de dar-dar-dar ;)
  • I have yes, about a stone but my SIL hasn't gained anything at all and she's used them for years.

    * I have done geography as well *
  • I finally went to see the doc and she thinks a faulty batch of mirenas may not have been impregnated with enough hormone, so she's taken some swabs etc. but thinks it will be a simple remove and replace with a new one next time I'm bleeding.

So if this happens to anyone else it's worth asking the GP if you want to avoid pregnancy or periods. If i hadn't got off my backside and seen the doc I could have had periods for the next 2.5 years, thinking it wasn't time for a new mirena yet.

    MEDICAL ADVICE

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this: Sorry, giving or asking for medical advice is not permitted on this forum as it’s not what this site is about. While discussing medical insurance policies, cheaper ways to see consultants, cashback for alternative health treatments and how to get specific medication cheaper (legally) are all perfectly acceptable we ask you specifically not to discuss what to do in the event of certain medical problems (please see this rule on the Health Board). • I have checked for the strings, I hate doing that! so it's still there, but I have horrific PMS and am very heavy, just like I was before. After having a lovely 2 years without periods I'm very grumpy to be getting them again :rotfl:

Thanks for replies :D I thought mirena lasted 3 years but searching online suggests 5 years, so it's unlikely to run out so soon. Ah well, time to ask about other ways of controlling periods I suppose.

I have just found out that I have bicornuate (sp) Uteris which means that mines splits in to 2. When they fitted the Mirena many years ago they didnt notice this and I really needed 1 in each side...OUCH. I fell preggers within 6 weeks and miscarried.....that was 11years ago and have only just found the above....but theynever noticed:confused: ....I had to have the Mirena removed under a GA as it was so painful. I could have ended up with a pregancy on each side:eek:

My mirena started to run out in the fourth year and periods started to return. My gynae advised me however this wasn't a pregnancy risk, as the hormones were only to control the bleeding. If the hormones ran out, the mirena would still operate as a normal coil, which prevents implantation, but can have side effects of heavier menstrual bleeding

Hope this sets some minds at ease!
  • Well I never! **TMI** I am having a really bad time with TOM lately, really bad headaches / migraines, very nauseous and I'm sure I have the Mirena Coil or Nova T??

I thought they lasted for 10 years?? Mine has been in for 8 years in October

How do I know what I have? I went to a Family Planning clinic after DS as I just happened to be passing at the right time with the coil in the pram bag!

The mirena last 5 years as a control to heavy periods but continues as a birth control device long after

You need to go to family planning and have it looked at, it will be in your notes which coil you have
  • My migraines are horrendous at the moment, since my periods returned. Can't wait for a new coil! I had forgotten how bad things were before mirena. specialk it may be worth asking the clinic.

nicki i forgot about the coil still working - doh!

  • dora was your friend's coil still in when she gave birth?

That can happen - my godmother had a baby and a coil at the same time, but it didn't do the baby any harm. She gave birth to both at once
