can a mirena run out early?

Daft question I'm sure, and I am not asking for medical advice - just anecdotes :D

I've had my mirena for more than 2 years and it's still there, but for the last month or so I have felt as if I don't have it anymore, and things are going back to how they were before, which is pretty horrific (TMI!).

Has this happened to anyone else? I'll see my GP in ten days. Just curious?

Sounds like it might not be there, IYSWIM? Although I always thought if mine fell out I would know?
Never heard of that happening before though - good luck at the doctor's next week!

I was told to check I could still feel the strings ...

Do that, but get to the GP or family planning clinic ... and if in doubt, use alternative methods of contraception!

  • I have checked for the strings, I hate doing that! so it's still there, but I have horrific PMS and am very heavy, just like I was before. After having a lovely 2 years without periods I'm very grumpy to be getting them again :rotfl:

Thanks for replies :D I thought mirena lasted 3 years but searching online suggests 5 years, so it's unlikely to run out so soon. Ah well, time to ask about other ways of controlling periods I suppose.

The strings may still be there but it is still possible that the coil has moved out of the uterus and now in the cervix which would mean it is not working properly. They have a five year life normally. I know lots of people who have no problems with them for that period of time. I had one for 2 years and had really heavy periods but it wasn't fitted prperly. Go to GP ar family planning ASAP because if things have change with it in then you may not be protected you must use another method of contraceptive until then.
  • I can't take my hyperactive toddler to that sort of appointment really, need to wait until he is in nursery. But thanks, I will see if the surgery can squeeze me in during the short window I have while he does his 'settling in' sessions on one hour this week.

Family planning clinics are often in the evening and you can just turn up, the nurses at the clinic are all very experience your own GP may not be trained to fit mirenas where as at the family planning clinic they are all experts in that department. You really need to be seen asap. If you have been period free for 2 years something has gone wrong.

I thought the amount of hormone released in the first two years is greater. You may find that your body is rebalancing to receive less hormone and things will settle down in the next few months.

yes my friend also had hers fitted and gave birth to a lovely baby boy 10 months later......
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming ~ WOO HOO what a ride!

  • dora was your friend's coil still in when she gave birth?

I have heard of them falling out, which is why I checked the strings. I'm rubbish, I never go to the doctors - I wait a month or two to see if things get better first :o My GP is trained to fit coils, but my cervix is awkward so she couldn't manage it last time and had to refer me to the hospital for expert insertion :rotfl:

I wouldn't mind if I got pregnant, it's having periods that I'm upset about, because I have problem periods.

I will call the GP and family planning clinic tomorrow and see if I can get seen. Family planning have a notice up asking women aged 25 and over to bog off and get sorted elsewhere, which is why I didn't think of their evening clinic.
