sealing round a new kitchen floor

You can get floor leveling compound from most DIY store or Builders Merchant. You can go for the lazy option and buy it in a tub premixed or in a packet and mix it yourself. Mix it up and throw it on the floor and level it with a plasterers trowel or a similar sized piece of wood with sanded edges and a home made handle.. Make sure you lay it in sections that you can reach with an arm and don't walk on it for as long as it says on the packet/tub.. Also keep your cats/dog out of the room - you can sand it after it's dried if you need to.
As for sealing the edges I would give silicone a miss as it can be difficult to apply and messy. There is this stuff called ColorSealant by Unika which is an acrylic sealant and much easier to apply. It comes in lots of different wood colours plus white and is pretty hard wearing once it has dried; any mistakes can be removed with a wet sponge if its still wet or with a knife and/or fingernails if its dry. I get it from Howdens but they are trade-only, I have seen it in flooring places though and MFI may sell it as Howdens if their trade branch..0
