Ipod And Free Downloads??

Hi can anyone give me an idiots guide step by step about downloading music?
son want ipod for his birthday, thats simple enough as ive seen one in Argos but how do i go about downloading music from the computer onto it? and which is cheapest way? Many thanks from a 40yr mum who hasnt a clue!!

iPods are designed to work with iTunes, which is a free software download available from Apple.
It will find all the music tracks currently on your PC and make them available to download to your iPod.
You can easily rip any CDs you have and send them to you iPod this way.
Of course you can also set up an account with iTunes and download music from the iTunes store.
Other sources of music are available, not all legal.

Nothing to stop you downloading it now to get used to it.

You might want to wait a week or so before buying, if what you intend to buy is one of the Apple iPods - they are making an announcement on September 9th and all the Apple rumour websites, podcasts and magazines have ben speculating on the subject - most predict either some new models or some price cuts, and Argos is frequently mentioned as having plans for a promotion after the announcement, so unless you really HAVE to buy it now, you might find waiting a week or so could possibly save you a few quid! (says Mr Patient who has been saving up Argos vouchers from survey sites for the last year and who is now waiting for the announcement with a great deal of interest if it means I'll get more iPod for my vouchers!)

As Penrhyn noted above, you will have to install iTunes on your computer (I believe there are other software packages out there that let you put files on the iPod but I don't know anything about them; iTunes is the official Apple product and it's free!) - you can add the contents of your CD's to your iPod just by putting the disc in your computer and leting iTunes rip it for you. You can also download non-DRM protected MP3 files from anywhere you can find them and add them to your iTunes library - once in there you can put them onto your iPod easily.

Thanks very much all three for replying, Son is 15 at end of month so ive just shown him your reply Quaint1 and he said a few weeks makes no difference, that would have been my luck to buy it just prior to a promotion:rolleyes: we used to have be able to download tunes from Limewire(?) but i seem to remember them charging us. this was about 2 to 3 years ago and it was for about £25 but i cant remember much about it, son built up a library of music and then he said one day that it just "stopped", son remembers it saying "loading search" and it would stay like that for ages and just stay that way. Think we will start downloading to pc for now and see how it goes. Thanks again:D

Limewire was never legal to download music from. Sounds like you bought the Pro version which was faster but you were breaking the law by downloading any music, videos or games from it

NEVER??? OMG never knew that!!! you can still find limewirewhen you google it now though???? god i should keep away from things on internet! im not safe. Got two bros in the police too!!!:eek:

Just coz you can google it doesn't make it legal. Limewire is very dodgy by the way.

It does not just offer music downloads, if you know what I mean!!

I would completely delete it from your computer if I was you and then run a good anti-spyware programme.

Had the ipod nano for my son, itunes are £15 for 18 songs, that seams expensive to me, does anyone recommend another site thats cheaper to download the latest chart music? thanks in advance x

You could try Play.com, they're generally a bit cheaper than iTunes:
