Obviously this is something your neighbour feels strongly about so she cant just accept and put up with it. Can't blame her for that really.

At least you know by offering to pay for it, then it is a genuinely felt concern and she's not just being bloody minded for the sake of it.

I wonder if the situation is different in different local authorities because when we lived in Wakefield in a terrace we had to put up with next door's chip fat smell coming out of their extractor fan straight into our dining room if we had the window open. I wish I could draw a picture to explain the lay out of the terrace but besically our dining room abutted their dining room ie shared an internal wall and then their kitchen extended out the back so when we went out our back door and looked to the right we had a solid brick wall which was their external kitchen wall and so on down the street. We suddenly noticed the grille on the wall one day (which they must have fitted by coming onto our back garden when we were at work). Just to add insult to injury they had also dsicarded tools used for the job ie left over putty/cement and the stick used to mix it on our garden - nice! The smell was revolting but when we called the council out they said they were within their rights. We weren't so up on boundary issues in those days but their wall will have been the boundary between the 2 houses. I'm sure I haven't explained this very well.
