  • Cheeky Chicken:

Whilst many competitions have clauses in the terms about data protection / data sharing, which mean they either can or cannot share an individuals data, it isn't really important.

What is important is non-identifying mean (average) data...

So from a particular campaign X% of people came from MSE, X% were female, X% were aged 22, X% live in leafy suburbia etc.

There are always exceptions to any set of stats, which is why individual data isn't actually of much use... it is all about trends.

Your individual surfing habits are no interest to me at all if I am mr big retailer, but the average surfing habits of the average person who enters my competition or wants my freebie is very intersting...

Such is the ruthlessness of marketing, by its very nature it has to be sexist, ageist, and everything-else-ist!

If mr big retailer is wanting to market a set of motorbike spanners, he must *assume* it is more likely to appeal to a group of 18-30yr old males, than it is to 55-70yr old females. That is both a sexist and ageist and indeed stereotypical statement, but that is how marketing works...

As for why there are more and more give-away type promos, I suspect half of it is simply due to lazy and unimaginitive PR people to be quite honest... and like you say, it is easy for PR company to simply say to mr big retailer "give us a big telly, and we'll do a raffle for it" and then send them a big bill for PR services! ;)
In the probably unlikely event that I actually post something of use to someone, an ickle vote of thanks would be much appreciated, in fact I might frame it and put it up on the wall next to my cycling proficiency certificate :D

Think on, and please READ what I have written before commenting!

I did read your post & in it you said:
So I would suggest a quick browse around the promotors website after you sign up for their freebie or comp, and again if they send you a follow up email, have a quick look back at their website - it only takes a few seconds after all.

And this is what I disagreed with and provided my reasons.

I'm afraid I'm going to disagree with you again.
However, if I was a business that gave away 1000 thingamys, only to discover my prize competition had ended up being entered by 90% professional compers that had no interest in my marketing message, then I wouldn't bother with it a second time... However, if I got the stats back to say that 90% of people who claimed a freebie or entered my comp had also had a look around my website whilst they were there, then I would probably think it was a worthwhile exercise...

But that is only your opinion (as this post is mine), but it runs counter to the experience of the people on this site. Competitions are not run with the express purpose of increasing sales from those who enter (apart from dodgy timeshare competitions), but from their target market overall. So there really is no need to buy, browse, register or subscribe unless you want to.

I also disagree with your arguement in another post.
If you've just spent say £100k on a promotion, and the stats come back from the PR comapny that half your spend has gone to people who have followed a link from an MSE forum, claimed your freebie, and left straight away never to return - would you be happy?

That is no different to buying advertising (TV, sides of buses, internet clicks) which has loads of people seeing it and not acting on it. There's a rather famous quote from a US department store owner from the early 20century which goes:

Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted, the trouble is I don;t know which half. (http://www.quotationspage.com/quote/1992.html)

The internet hasn't changed this, only given marketing managers the illusiion of better info when in reality, as survey after survey shows, people do not necessarily provides true responses to all questions asked.

I find myself disagreeing with lots of other points in your posts (I think your views on statistics and marketing are equally simplistic & wrong) but I don't think it will help the forum discussion much.

Probably better that we just agree to disagree about the need to buy/ browse/ subscribe in order to maintain the flow of new competitions.

If you right-click on your toolbar it may be there as an option you can tick to get it back again.

I don't think you'll find any here as there are competitions on the Coke Zone which people are entering using their codes :) I know we are generous in sharing comps & answers & help & tips but I'm not sure the generosity runs to giving someone else their comp entries :D
Sad because you don't know what to do? Comping question? Take a look in the Comping Guide to find out
  • Mpython: we shall indeed agree to disagree - it is not my intention (or yours I'm sure) to have a major debate in the middle of this forum!

Good luck to everyone with their comping, however you choose to do it...
