looking for car to suit large dog!

Hi,

I currently have a 2001, 5 door Yaris, and am thinking of changing my car. I now have a large breed dog and at the moment it travels on the back seat on a dog hammock. I'm thinking it might be a good time to change the car. I've heard that lots of larger cars are turning up in auction now and that the money saved in buying it, might be more than the running cost increase over 3-5 years.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Hubbie has an old Merc estate which is a little too big for me.

Thanks

Frazzled

What budget? A slightly larger car like the Spacewagon/Golf Plus/Scenic etc would be bigger but not huge?

  • h i have a renualt scenic. It is great because the seats fold forward really quickly and easily and sort of turn it into a van. so loads of room. also the seats don't get covered in dog hair, but best of all, i have made a metal grille which fits over the back window. If you are not familiar with this car although it is a hatchback the window also flips up so you can keep the door shut but have the window open ( obviously not while you are driving) and i put a lightweight cloth over the window so it drapes around and keeps the sun / driving rain out as well. P.s. it is also a really economical car.
  • I don't think any dog, large or small, are allowed to drive on the public highway - I guess an automatic would be essential (no opposable thumb makes gear changing difficult).

You may be best looking at an older car without a CAT and be carefull they dont go dogging!

I used to get 4 dogs (great dane, collie x and 2 lurchers) in a peugeot 406 estate.
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D
  • How about a Mini - I understand you can get two whales in a Mini so one large dog should be no probs.

If a banger car at the £1k end of the market is an option a Skoda Felicia estate might be a good choice for you. If the spacious boot is not big enough, the rear seats actually come out very easily (rather than just folding forward), they also do in the hatchback version. The 1.6 AEE VW engine I believe is well respected. There is a common misconception (no doubt perpetuated by dealers to increase the sale value) that the Felicia is VW Polo based, but it is in fact mostly Skoda design.
