if i turn a radiator off....................

....will it reduce the gas consumption..

if you get my drift.

  • Yes every rad you turn off will reduce your gas bill. May not be alot but you are not warming as much water up Have you got thermostatic valves on your rads?

  • yes i have.
i don`t have a room thermostat so are rad thermostats just as effective??

Bear in mind tho Skint, that the heat from the hot rooms will move to the cold areas, that's fizziks.
  • Hi

I think a room stat would serve you better. Along with insulation in cavity wall and loft.

Turn the radiators down as you don't want damp problems and shut the doors otherwise the other radiators will heat the air which will move the the rooms with the radiators off. Same total energy needed and you'll get drafts. No saving. Thermostatic valves would be best as you could then set a lower temperature rather than just a lower flow. With plain valves you'll just have to turn it down and judge the room temperature.
  • Are the thermostats for individual radiators easy to install ?
  • You will need to drain down and then replace the valve with the TRV.

Probably best doing them together as it means only one drain down.

Thing is though, like any plumbing job, it could go sweet as a nut, or the valves could be seized, the drain down not drin properly, the refill might have a blockage, all things I have seen on supposedly simple jobs.
