thread subscription

Options
When you subscribe to a thread You ONLY give email as a method for notification. Could you not also add Private Message (on MSE) as a notification method? This for me and many like me, would be a far quicker and the most convenient method of notification.

If someone sends me a PM, it arrives in my e-mail inbox which I always have open, plus it shows the top of the page where the links to; - Main Site, Forum, User CP, etc are, I also get a window pop up saying something like; - " you have a new private message would you like to view it....."

This is at the bottom of User CP "edit options"; -

"The forum can send a message to your email address to inform you when someone sends you a private message. Receive Email Notification of New Private Messages
If you are browsing the forums when you receive a new private message, the system can pop-up a notification box informing you of the new message. Show New Private Message Notification Pop-up"

    Just tick the relevant boxes.

Yes that's all very true, but some people don't have their email clients open 24/7 when the computer is on.

For those people who DO have email client "always on" there would be no need to want a PM on thread subscription, because one of the options given is email notification.

I think you have misunderstood my request. I am talking about "subscribing to a thread" look at the top of a thread (that you have not participated in) under "thread tools" when you do this, you are given 3 options on notification.

I am suggesting adding PM to those options, because for many people (like me) that would be the fastest method of finding out a new reply has been added to the thread.

I would also suggest that you should be able to apply different methods for different threads. For example I just looked at thread tools/subscribe again and it occured to me, if I selected email notification, then all the threads I am subscribed to (about 1150 as it happens) would send an email when they are updated, if PM was allowed this would fill up your PM box pretty quick, so you would have to unsubscribe from threads, in order to prioritise your notifications. But many people would want to keep their subscriptions showing in the user CP for loads of unimportant threads, and at the same time it would be nice if you could categorise a particular thread as a "hot" thread that you would like to have a PM or an email notification when it is replied to.
[EDIT:] I just found out this is already possible, you can allocate subscribed threads to custom named folders, and you can request email on certain folders only. So adding the option of a PM for certain threads should be a simple task. And for all I know, asking for email notice, might only apply to that single thread within a folder, and not the whole folder as I think it might be.

I have not misunderstood your request, there is a facility to receive PMs without subscribing to threads as per your OP request, and as I attempted to inform you in my previous post, take a look at the image below and tick the boxes I have ringed, you will then get a pop up when you get a PM whilst browsing the site, it works for me so it should work for you.

To access it you need, User CP> edit options.

PMs are not for informing of a reply to a thread, they are a PM direct to you and it does not have to relate to a thread you are subscribed to.

If after that I have misunderstood, then I can't help and you will need someone with more techie expertise than me, which is very low down!

Sorry but you have misunderstood :D

The bit I have highlighted is exactly what Wig wants. They want to have PM as an option of informing them when a subscribed thread has been added to by another poster rather than only being able to choose email notification.

But as I said in what you have highlighted, that is not the purpose of a PM, so Wig will have to make do with what is available or ask the admin to make the adjustment, can't see the point myself, it seems to be acceptable to everyone else.

Why would anyone want to be subscribed to 1150 threads? It was not that long ago that you could only be subscribed to a certain limit and I think that might have been about 50.

I know, you know and Wig knows that at the moment PM's aren't used to notify us of thread updates.
As this is posted in the "Site feedback: Questions and suggestions" section of the site then I'd say that Wig is putting to the powers that be about adding PM as a way of being notified.
I read it as a question and a suggestion which is what this section of the site is for.

    Thank you Derrick,
I wasn't aware of the email notification which you mentioned regarding a PM, and have just altered mine, as that was someting which I had wanted anyway.

Not sure if anyone can help with something else. I had been subscribed to a particular forum for daily updates, which always came through at about midnight. Several weeks ago that stopped for no apparent reason, and although I keep clicking to receive the daily email, it just does not arrive anymore...

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys...:)

What you said, was not addressing the "site feedback and suggestion" that I was making regarding having PM as a means of subscription notification. You probably don't see the point because you are not subsribed "by email notice" to any threads. But many people are subscribed to certain threads, for which they would find notification really important. At present the only method offered is email notice. For some people (like you) that would suffice, for others (like me) the quickest and most convienient method of notice would be PM. Hence I suggested it for the admins to take note and hopefully make an adjustment.

Every thread I ever replied to is automatically added to a subscription folder. I do not voluntarily subscribe to them, just as I also do not voluntarily unsubscribe from them. Up until a couple of days ago I had no interest in thread subscriptions, so they built up steadily over time.

I suspect if you went to this thread
    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1133485
at the top of the page click on "thread tools"
click on "subscribe to this thread"
the next screen will show you two drop down boxes, the lower box will tell you how many threads you are currently subscribed to.

I suspect that for you aswell the number of subscribed threads is also massive. Unless you have always made a determined effort to unsubscribe from threads in your userCP menu. Or perhaps you have ticked some box somewhere that says "don't automatically subscribe to threads you reply to".

Either way, I'm sure you now understand why I am subscribed to 1150 threads. and you also understand that you misunderstood my OP - which is fine, thank you for offering to help.

Do you still get Martins Wednesday money tips emails? Perhaps your email server is blocking them, change your email address and see if that helps.

You don't see the point because you have no need for it, probably because you are not subsribed "by email notice" to any threads.I am subscribed to the threads by e-mail notice to the ones I want to be subscribed to until they are of no further use to me, then I delete them or put them into folders for future reference. But many people are subscribed to certain threads, for which they would find notification really important. This can be done by keeping your e-mail client open, it is not a big deal to open it. At present the only method offered is email notice. For some people (like you) that would suffice, for others the quickest and most convienient method of notice would be PM. Hence I suggested it for the admins to take note and hopefully make an adjustment.

Every thread I ever replied to is automatically added to a subscription folder. I do not voluntarily subscribe to them, You must have voluntarily subscribed to them by ticking the box you can see in my post #4,"instant email notification" just as I also do not voluntarily unsubscribe from them.

You can also do that by clicking on User CP, then "list subscrptions" in the left hand menu

I suspect that for you aswell the number of subscribed threads is also massive. No it isn't,(explained above), I have at the moment 75 subscribed, and some will be deleted/put into folders shortly), Unless you have always made a determined effort to unsubscribe from threads in your userCP menu. I do. Or perhaps you have ticked some box somewhere that says "don't automatically subscribe to threads you reply to". No I have ticked the box in "edit options" to "receive instant email notification", but I don't keep them there forever, As I said earlier I am sure they used to limit subscribed threads to about 50!

Either way, I'm sure you now understand why I am subscribed to 1150 threads. Then delete/move some to folders, surely some of those must be ages old and you will have no use for them! if someone replies to one of them, it will come to the top of the page and as you are scrolling you will see it. and you also understand that you misunderstood my OP - which is fine, thank you for offering to help.

I can be of no further assistance and it will have to be left to the admins to respond, although I wouldn't expect a positive outcome.
