I'm outside the O2 broadband network!

Just phoned O2 as I was wanting to move from orange the o2 but wanted to see if I would wangle a better deal first. They said that the best they could offer me was £17.50 a month as I was outside the area!
I could understand if I live in the middle of nowhere but I live in a reasonable size town near a big city. He then tried to offer me mobile broadband. If O2 were struggling with home broadband in my area, how rubbish would mobile broadband be!
Has this happened to anyone else or is it just me?
BWT I then rang my original provider, saying I wanted to cancel my account and said I was thinking about movin to O2 (;) ) and ended up with a much better deal that I'd been on so am happy in the end, just a bit puzzled.

This could mean one of two things:
1. O2 do not have equipment at your local exchange, so the best they can do is supply you a BT-provided service they re-sell at perhaps a higher cost, or
2. You are too far away from your phone exchange to receive an ADSL service hence the suggestion of mobile broadband. This applies across the country, it's not just rural areas - I've had the same in Welwyn, Blackpool, etc - Milton Keynes used to have blackspots as well - once you're much more than a mile and a half from the exchange it's touch and go: ADSL is a distance-limited technology.
Visit the O2 site and see if they have a broadband checker, and put your postcode in. Does it say you can't have ADSL?0 -
£17.50 sounds like BT connect which would point to O2 not being in your exchange yet.0

Loony enter your local exchange name into Samknows, you will see on the right hand side of the page which ISPs can offer an LLU broadband service.
Mobile coverage bears no relation to the ADSL landline coverage as it uses a different technology. That gum you like is coming back in style.0
