When do you put your CH on?

I am rather chilled today and if I could afford it I would put my heating on for a bit to warm the house through, but alas, I cant afford it, so put warm winter clothes on but its so miserable. My house is very cold despite having DG windows, draughtproofing etc. My CH is run off gas fire back boiler, but its an old one and the draught that comes down from the chimney is horrendous, plus I have fixed ventilators in all the rooms that the Council wont allow to be blocked up , I think we face north west and when the wind is westerly you can feel every bit of it through the ventilators so even with the heating on and the gas fire we still cant keep warm and comfortable.I am an OAP with my 15 year grand child living with me and we are both cold blooded!
I have thought about extra heating especailly in my large cold kitchen but dont know which to get, it would have to be free standing and cheap to run(if thats possible these days).
Will use the ideas from this site, duvets on the sofa sounds inviting, we have hotties for bed, warm nightclothes, bed socks, slippers, no problems there, its just being by myself in the daytime when the weather is as miserable as today that I feel low and cold.
Anymore ideas anyone?
Thanks to all who reply.

I am by no means an example to follow but subscribe to the idea that it's not good to let a house get cold and damp. Well, it's not good for me because I get miserable when I'm cold. Today I came home for work - tipping down outside, house chilly. I put heating on for half an hour while I got changed, put kettle on, cleared up a bit. Will probably do the same this evening. I tend to do this quite a bit in the weeks leading up to 'putting the heating on' proper to delay the big switch on.
