NTL Price Rises from 1 January 2006

Just looked at the NTL website and we are being subjected to more price rises including a connection charge increase from 5p to 6p per call.

    Doesn't sound much but that's a 20% increase!

Coupled with a flat rate 3p/minute for each minute above 60 ........
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

So what options have us NTL users got, then. It seems to be getting harder! Now 1899 has increased cable access to 0.5p per min from 0p per min, and FirstTelecom have a separate tariff for cable customers (unlike before) there don't seem to be as many competative options that work on a cable line.

Onetel seems to be the best I can find, with free weekend calls or 99p for all off peak calls, and the phonecoop offer 4.7p per call off peak (see here http://www.phone.coop/home_usr/home_usr_tariff.html ) but there are certainly not many to choose from.

Isn't it time that OFCOM applied more controls over the cable companies? For instance my football club supporters trust set up a directory enquiries service - number is 118 821 40p per call from BT lines :) but although BT are obliged to let folk on BT lines use it, Telewest (fairly big in this area) aren't and don't!

Can we as customers do anything together or Martin address this issue in some way that will make a difference...?

Not so easy to change. My ntl phone line comes into the house, via cable, to the main phone and other sockets feed off that. The BT line (disconnected eons ago) is physically in a different place and doesn't link up (if it is still in one piece).

With a £75 installation fee? I think not.
