Orange store - faulty own brand goods

I purchased a charger and a lead (two seperate parts) from my Orange store 2 months ago.
Long story short the lead ended up being faulty today. I went to the Orange shop and he said he could exchange it or refund it but only if I had a receipt. As far as I'm aware I no longer have it and had to buy a new lead. Now I know it only cost me £4.99 but it isn't the point. It wasn't my fault it was faulty in less than two months.
I may be wrong but I thought if something was faulty you could get an exchange or refund without a receipt.
Am I wrong?
Thanks guys

Technically you need proof of purchase, the most common being a receipt.
Of course you can't just walk into a retailer without of proof purchase expecting a replacement/refund/exchange etc. It's obvious what would happen if you could - they'd all end up going out of business due to fraud.0 -
The thing is though that I didn't want a refund. I wanted an exchange for a faulty item.
I also told them that I purchased it when I paid off my phone bill two months ago and I know for a fact that they can pull of the receipt as they have done it before. Yet they won't.Debts: Gym £[strike]465.75[/strike] Student account [strike]£1039.88[/strike] Overdraft [strike]£129.00[/strike] Credit Card [strike]£2772.22[/strike] Loan [strike]£6222.01 [/strike]

Did you pay by cash or card, it'd only be of use pulling off the receipt if you paid by card as that would prove it was you who paid for the item.
May be they'll have CCTV footage of you going in and buying it.0 -
It was by cash. But I purchased it on the same receipt as I paid off my bill. I know for a FACT that they can pull of copys of receipts with paid bills off themDebts: Gym £[strike]465.75[/strike] Student account [strike]£1039.88[/strike] Overdraft [strike]£129.00[/strike] Credit Card [strike]£2772.22[/strike] Loan [strike]£6222.01 [/strike]

You've got to bare in mind it depends how long the records are kept for.0 -
They are kept for 6 months
I had a problem with a missing bill 3 months ago and they printed off all the receipts under my account number for me. He told me then that it's 6 months. Can't see them being too happy to do this when a) you have lost the original receipt; b) it is only £4.99.0 -
Shouldn't the Orange store acknowledge that the product is an Orange specific product that can only be bought in an orange store and therefore exchange it? They are branded differently as opposed to ones sold in other retailers.0

None of the chargers and leads I've had from Orange have been branded. Why do you think they will?
Also this doesn't get past the fraud element even if they are branded. Eg, fraudster finds one in a bin and takes it back to the shop. Thats why proof of purchase is required. It's got nothing to do with whether the product actually came from any shop, it's to do with whether the claim is genuine.
The naive people who don't know what some people will try on!0
